General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI get that it was a rightwing shit show.
But I think the Dems could have used it to our advantage. Back room secret talks with 10 of the most moderate repub members, decide on which one is moderate or easy to work with. Then have one of the other 10 nominate him. When their name is called those 10 plus the dems vote for and elect him/her.
This scenario would at least achieve some moderation in the house. I don't see it as us helping them, more like us helping america with turning our eyes away from the lunatics.
Who knows, maybe this secretly was tried or talked about.

Or if you disagree with the OP's premise, how about saying why with logic instead of snark?

(11,023 posts)Maybe they shouldn't start discussions about how the Democrats failed on a board that has a rule about not bashing Democrats.

(8,203 posts)IMO, there's a vast difference between suggesting alternate strategies/wondering why a different strategy wasn't used and bashing.
From DU's terms of service:
Don't bash Democratic public figures
Do not post disrespectful nicknames, insults, or highly inflammatory attacks against any Democratic public figures. Do not post anything that could be construed as bashing, trashing, undermining, or depressing turnout for any Democratic general election candidate, and do not compare any Democratic general election candidate unfavorably to their general election opponent(s).
Why we have this rule: Our forum members support and admire a wide variety of Democratic politicians and public figures. Constructive criticism is always welcome, but our members don't expect to see Democrats viciously denigrated on this website. This rule also applies to Independents who align themselves with Democrats (eg: Bernie Sanders).
(Bold added.)

(61,608 posts)This morning the internet is full of the right wing talking point that somehow this is a defeat for Democrats.
Members of a Democratic discussion board have some responsibilities, and one of them is to avoid amplifying right wing talking points, intentionally or not.
As a member of this discussion board, I too have the right to ask a question, which I did.

Think about it.

(1,834 posts)I feel like Nancy would have suggested turning every stone. It is possible that every member wanted to hang on to their paychecks instead of thinking about the damage this fiasco was doing to the country. Crazy how 20 People can bring down 400. Pretty depressing!

(5,711 posts)That Republicans left to their own thinking, would anchor down McCarthy with their rediculous demands. Thereby making them less electable in 2024.

(42,702 posts)The idea that there are moderate republicans who would have abandoned McCarthy to support someone who could only be elected speaker with the support of 200+ Democrats is magical thinking in the extreme.

EVERYONE SAW and now KNOWS that the DEMS WORK TOGETHER to PEACEFULLY transfer power.
With a solid 212 we can block their illegal attempts over and over and over again.
THIS WAY they OWN their ineptitude.
NOW did Jefferies give a solid A-Z spank to the incoming Waldos in search of themselves?
YES he did.
WILL WE KEEP SPANKING THEM WHEN THEY DO WRONG?
YES WE WILL.

(1,766 posts)You cannot trust r thugs. Not for one second. Any promises they make to Democrats are writ on water--they are useless, because they never have any intention of keeping them.
The first lesson of any decent person's life should always be: Never trust the utter scum that is an r thug. They are all liars and cheats and thieves.
NO EXCEPTIONS.

(42,770 posts)Said on CNN that there were a group of Dems who wanted to work with McCarthy in some way to stop the gang of 20 highjack. But it was McCarthy who refused to work with Dems. Your idea was to leave McCarthy out of it, which sounds better. Agree a GOP shitshow but would be interesting to understand the machinations on our side.
