Debbie Stabenow retirement: Who's in, who's out on 2024 US Senate race

U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow's surprise announcement Thursday that she won't run for a fifth term in 2024 sent shock waves across Michigan's political landscape, as potential candidates began making initial calculations and handicappers started speculating about who's likely in and who's out.

....(snip)....

Who's out (at least, we think they're out)

As of Friday, a handful of people appeared to take themselves out of the running, at least for now.

That includes Gov. Gretchen Whitmer, who put out a statement praising Stabenow's service and indicating she had every intention of remaining Michigan's governor "for the next four years." Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan and U.S. Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, a recent transplant into Michigan, also said they had no plans to seek the seat, as did U.S. Rep. Dan Kildee, D-Flint Township, and former U.S. Rep. Andy Levin, D-Bloomfield Township.

....(snip)....

Meanwhile, former U.S. Rep. Candice Miller, R-Harrison Township, who has been Macomb County's public works commissioner since 2017 and is also a former secretary of state, indicated Thursday that she is weighing a run. But by Friday morning, she'd made up her mind: she's opting against another congressional run, confirmed her former chief of staff and current Republican political consultant Jamie Roe.

....(snip)....

Who might get in?

....But Michiganders have only elected one Republican to the U.S. Senate since 1973, and that was for only one, six-year term. That history, combined with recent statewide political trends, likely means Democrats have an advantage heading into the race.

U.S. Reps. Elissa Slotkin of Lansing, Haley Stevens of Birmingham and Debbie Dingell of Ann Arbor are known to be giving it consideration. Slotkin — a former acting assistant Defense Department secretary — could be a particularly powerful candidate, since she's known for raising scads of money and winning tough, competitive races, as could be Stevens, a former chief of staff to President Barack Obama's auto task force. Dingell can fairly claim near-universal name recognition in the state, is close to President Joe Biden and has key contacts on both sides of the political aisle.

....(snip)....

Tudor Dixon, who lost to Whitmer last year, obviously increased her name recognition running for governor, won the support of the powerful DeVos family and had former President Donald Trump's backing.

She hasn't said she's running but on Twitter on Thursday she wrote, "Debbie Stabenow’s retirement gives Republicans the opportunity to coalesce behind a strong candidate (and) put in the work on the ground now." She certainly didn't take herself out of the running, but given her showing against Whitmer — she lost by more than 10 percentage points — it's far from certain that the Republican establishment is eager to endorse her again. ..........(more)
