General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsMemo to just about every damn TV talker I have heard so far today:
PLEASE stop wasting everyone's time by discussing how McCarthy will have to "reach across the aisle" and "be bipartisan" in order to---GOVERN!
HE HAS NO INTENT TO "GOVERN"! He had to agree not to in order to get his name on the door of the office he moved into days before it took 15 elections to "earn" the title "Speaker".
He will do as the likes of Gaetz and Boebert demand. In other words, "investigate", slander, destroy---rinse and repeat.
( UNLESS---several House insurrectionists are indicted. )

(24,746 posts)Although they came across as asses in the chamber last night. Maybe Rogers didn't get the memo?
In any case, we have to outsmart and outmaneuver them!
And we have to believe we are up to it!
Faith, my friend!

(129,183 posts)Let me be the first to say that they NORMALLY would have demanded the reverse - that "Democrats need to 'reach across the aisle'" and cowtow to the dysfunctional MAGats, always directing the onus to be on Democrats to act, NEVER on the GOP.
So perhaps this could be considered a temporary "aberration" from how they usually frame things.

McCarthy isn't going anywhere, no matter how many times the extremists pitch a hissy fit crying for him to go. They don't have the votes to remove him, and it's unlikely that they ever will.
People are freaking out about the one-person call for nothing.
Relax. Really. And buy popcorn for all the times they'll run smack dab into that self-own brick wall, head first. It'll be like watching a live-action version of Wile E. Coyote with an endless supply of anvils.

(17,205 posts)He's got the job, now. He can just ignore every deal he made with the fringe elements to get there. But he's obviously enough of a suck-up to DJT and the radical elements that he will indulge them anyway.
But so what, the GOP never had any intent to "govern," they don't even have a platform other than "do shit that will own the Libs." The deals he had to make to get elected won't change any of that.
The media, of course, will never acknowledge that. Because their role is to invent gravitas no matter the clown show, so that they may appear judicious and grave themselves.

(20,818 posts)media, their talking heads, and too many pundits just cannot seem to handle that they can't use the "Dems in disarray" trope that they usually trot out like group think clockwork, that there's simply no way to spin it to that affect this time. We found it truly hilarious.

(1,766 posts)Because he's just enough smarter than them to know if his lunatic fringe party has this much trouble getting him into the speaker's chair, they're not going to be any better at getting him out of it.
He's got a whole lot more supporters in the not Traitor Caucus than he does in it. He can promise the little terrors anything, and get out of it later.
And there won't be a dang thing they can do to stop him. The fractures in the party are widening, not disappearing. They're just about coming to blows against each other, already, and that will not be improving any time soon.

(367 posts)When the Republicans shut down the government the Democrats should not cave into the demands of the Republicans. This would be a death by a hundred wounds. I am very afraid for Social Security and Medicare. The Democrats need to stand firm, and not back down!!!

(3,487 posts)The HoR can't do anything to destroy any programs. Nothing crazy they pass will pass in the Senate. The HoR will just overplay their hand as they always do and we'll retake the HoR, keep the Senate and the POTUS in 2024.

(1,766 posts)It's like too many people think that the r thugs will get whatever they want, when they don't have the power to do jack.
Sure, the worst of them will try to shut down the government this fall, but that will not turn out well for them. We'll have a few days of hurt, and then some kind of deal will get made with the Democrats to save the world. Well, after their donors pay off enough purple-district r thugs to save their fortunes.
