Updated story on the teacher shot by her 6yr old student. Gift article

https://wapo.st/3Xf5Tuk

snip-"No further information was immediately available Saturday about what happened and how the boy came to have a handgun. “It’s an ongoing investigation,” Jones said."

(Jones is the mayor of Newport News.)

snip-" Robert Walters, 67, a local blues musician with a granddaughter in kindergarten at Richneck Elementary, said he encountered a scene of agitation and chaos as he joined the swarm of parents and guardians rushing to find their children after the shooting."

snip-" Relatives of the kindergartners were among the first to be reunited with their children.

“She came out and said, ‘Papa, my school is broken. There’s something broken in the school,’” Walters recalled. Some children came out crying, he said."

Shannon Watts, the founder of the gun violence prevention group Moms Demand Action, said the shooting underscores the need for stronger gun safety laws.

“This is a horrific tragedy,” she said. “But it’s also completely preventable and senseless.” Watts said the facts of the case are startling. “The idea that a 6-year-old can have intent and the ability to shoot and kill their teacher on purpose is bizarre,” she said.

There are rare cases where a child of six might show psychopathic tendencies but in almost every case—even those—they’re still in the age of magical thinking. Dead isn’t dead, things and people aren’t fixed and permanent the way we think of them. She might have intended to “kill” her teacher but you’d be shocked how many little kids would like to see someone dead in a moment of pain or fear or rage. But they don’t know what it means, only what they’ve seen. In a week that same person could be their hero, their savior, or nobody in particular.

There is a wide variety of manifestations of development according to how kids are raised, what they see as a norm, what traumas they may have suffered and where they are on the sensory input spectrum among a host of others. The problem here is, and I say this as a professional, THE GODDAMNED GUN!!

The article says the shooter was a boy. The girl mentioned in the article is the granddaughter of one of the people they interviewed, not the shooter.

Parents like this are part of the many reasons I think parenthood should require a license.
