Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-Texas) said Sunday that ousted Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro should be extradited from Florida after his radical supporters attacked key government institutions in Brasília over the weekend following his election loss.
Jair Bolsonaro is in Florida, hanging out with Donald Trump, Castro said during an appearance on CNN. Hes a dangerous man. They should send him back to his home country of Brazil.
Castro also said Bolsonaro used the Trump playbook to inspire the attacks and that former Trump aides, like Stephen K. Bannon and Stephen Miller have been trying to spread what is really an authoritarian fascist movement and inspire domestic terrorism in other countries around the world. And Brazil is one example of that.

(21,677 posts)Torres and Governor Ibaneis Rocha are both close allies of Bolsonaro (especially the former).
Torres has now been fired by Rocha - but only after President Lula da Silva ordered the city's security forces be places under federal receivership.
There's every reason to believe both men conspired to keep police out of the way just before the insurrection (Brasilia, like most Brazilian cities, suffers from high crime rates - and is normally heavily policed).
Rocha and Torres had earlier come under fire for banning the sale of water for supporters of Lula de Silva during the latter's inaugural on New Year's Day - with temperatures well over 100°.
Any resemblances to today's GOP are pure conicidence.

(13,933 posts)maybe Castro used that word, but he is quoted as saying "send him back," which would more accurately be described as "deported"

(6,860 posts)temporary visit for surgery and subsequent deportation. Are there precidents set by that which may inform Bolsonaro's options visavis extradition from Florida to justice in his home country? The Shah was definitely wanted by his Iranian successors.

(94,757 posts)I'm not aware of any request by the Brazilian authorities. As with US law, it likely requires more than "we know he's guilty of something".

(6,860 posts)I didn't mean to imply that the Brazilians wanted the Shah.
What I was getting at was that I remember the then President Carter interceding for the Shah's healthcare but expressly limiting his persona gratia status to a short recovery after surgery. This humanitarian move was criticized at the time by his detractors who were always poised to condemn his every move. Still, it was an example of the executive unilaterally moving to address the immigration status of a former national executive wanted for trial by his home country. My thinking was that therein might be a precedent in which the ex-Brazilian president may be liable for forced repatriation to Brazil if Biden were to choose to intercede in this case. A shoot-out at the Miami International airport with DeSantis' black-shirts would be great entertainment plus an important object lesson to any other would-be "presidential candidates" who assume a mantle and authority presuming to thwart a sitting POTUS. The prosecution and execution of another Nazi along with his accomplices would be an object lesson apropos to these times.
My only question is would the FBI or NG or US Marshalls or whoever actually follow an executive order from a Democratic president? I wouldn't trust the Secret Service to shoot the right way.

DeSantis is actually taking over corporations, School curriculums, having detractors arrested for ginned up election crimes, etc., etc., etc.

(47,572 posts)Like in the current Idaho murder-guy thing, does Idaho extradite the suspect from Pennsylvania(?), or does Idaho request that Pennsylvania extradite the subject? I honestly dont know how that works.

(50,566 posts)The suspect can also waive extradition and be shipped right back. In essence, extradition is being dragged somewhere against your will.

If a foreign leader is "harbored" here, it could only be with the indulgence of the executive branch.
The man's just legally here for whatever reason. He's charged with no crimes and there have been no requests for extradition under typical criminal standards.
If circumstances change, I trust the State Department to do what they feel is in America's interest.

I suspect he is staying safe in order to return to power once they mucked things up there with secret militia and everything.
So my guess is that it is an extremely BAD move to allow him to stay here unless he is called to DC to give some testimony to Smith as more tendrils forms the ugliest situation possible.
Only a major fool would allow him to say here.
