17. Hey, no, I PROTEST!

The SWAMP RATS was the name we gave to my son's group of friends his sophomore through senior year in high school, and here's how it came about. We had moved to a new house, a split foyer or raised ranch, and he acquired, by coin flip, the downstairs bedroom, which had access to the adjoining den. This became known as The Swamp and was the after school and weekend hangout for his friends, who by definition became referred to as the Swamp Rats. There were, at any given time, anywhere from a dozen to about twenty of them, male to start with but female also as they began bringing along female acquaintances and girlfriends. I was known as "Ma Jay" or the "Swamp Mom" and my late ex as "Papa W". It got to the point where I counted noses before cooking dinner and was never sure, on weekends, how many bodies I'd find on my way to the washer and dryer. They were good kids who knew their presence was dependent on observing the house rules (few, but unbreakable), and they grew up to be good people. They still call me "Ma Jay" and I still call them my Swamp Rats. So I protest labeling Greasy Stevie Three-shirts with that appellation.
