(21,883 posts)But never had one like that. It's usually something like, somebody has been "using" your social security number and we will inactivate unless you call us back and give us all of your personal information. I tell them to go go hell and answer no questions. Actually, I usually don't answer the phone. Caller ID is wonderful.

(76,693 posts)They said "for security purposes can you give your 9 digit social security number?"
I replied "Social Security doesn't know my Social Security number?" Then, I hit "off" on the landline.

(60,568 posts)$5,500 in back taxes. I was to meet them in front of the Federal Building in Pittsburgh with the money or I would be arrested. I hung up. I got 8 calls that day from the same number. Didn't answer. Yes, caller ID is wonderful.

(16,159 posts)I usually ask them "Does your mother know that you're a crook?"
Than I hang up.
Hope it causes them a tiny bit of pain as payment for the pain they cause others.

(822 posts)there is a great Youtube video of Rick Rickenbacker playing along with one of these parasites, both to waste as much of his time as possible, and then also to allow you to hear just what they pull.

I've tried to be nice and ask them not to call and they call me a whiner. So, I'm not nice anymore.
Being an evil swearing fuck cut these calls down by 75% in 3 weeks. And yes, I try to get them on the phone. Some will curse back, but most hang up the call. I first tried to say they were a thief and violating 2 of the 5 deadly sins of Hinduism, being a thief and associating with thieves. That doesn't work as well ass I thought.
They don't like when I ask if their family knows what they are doing (it would bring shame on their house). Female callers will immediately hang up on this. Some male callers will hang up too, but not as much as with the women.
Questioning a male caller's manhood really pisses them off!
But, just using an array of swear words is the best. A couple will say "You know you are being recorded" and to that I retort that I don't care, as you are a criminal and you call me multiple times a day.

(2,369 posts)I am a disability attorney. I practice Social Security law all day, every day. Your information and and advice here is good, except one critical false statement:
SOCIAL SECURITY DOES CALL PEOPLE.
It is infrequent. It almost always will be around the time that a person has a disability claim in process, or is applying for their retirement income. They do call to deal with financial issues too, including asking for or verifying bank account information for direct deposit. Most of the time after the payments are started, you would not get any more calls. But, if you change banks, theres a professing glitch, or something similar - yes, really, you may get a call.
The CORRECT way to keep safe is to decline to talk to the person who is calling you, assuming it appears even slightly legitimate - otherwise free to cackle and be as rude to an obvious scammer as your little heart desires. If it seems at all potentially legit, call Social Security at YOUR LOCAL OFFICE, and ask if someone from SSA was attempting to reach you. When YOU call the real number, yes, its a hassle and theyll ask for your info just like a scammer before telling you if anyone was trying to reach you.
