Sunday saw that hard lesson play out in Brazil, with coordinated and simultaneous attacks explicitly inspired by Trumps assault on the US Capitol and cheered on by American Republicans on Brazils presidential palace, capitol building, and supreme court building.

(11,738 posts)If we really look at what Conservatism, the base of right wing ideology, actually is, historically and ideologically then your link and the story are not surprising or new.
Conservatism was born out of a defense of absolute monarchy and aristocracy. The fathers of Conservatism, Edmond Burke and Joseph DeMaistre were rich aristocrats who while accepting some of the Enlightenment ideal, were shocked and appalled at the "common" man challenging the French Monarchy. The two were influence by Hobbes, who had the same sentiments during the English Civil war, which saw the absolute monarchy in England brought to heel. When monarchy as a viable form of government, was eventually swept out, Conservatives didn't just say, "Well, I guess we need to just treat everyone equally", they moved the goal posts and put their messaging behind the idea that Wealth makes nobility and dictates the hierarchy.
Because liberalism and equality, or "Liberte, Egalite, and Fraternite were the dominant ideologies, they had to grant a measure of self determination, but they never gave up on the idea that the "natural order" of life is a hierarchy where the "best" people were in charge. That idea is anathema to democracy in the long run. Not necessarily the idea of "the best" being in positions of leadership, but the concept of hierarchy. Liberals believe in gradations of intelligence, strength, etc... and we accept that we want people with skills and talents to be in positions of leadership, however, we (Liberals) balance that with the idea that EVERYONE has equal dignity and should have equal opportunity to develop their own talents. Conservatives DO NOT believe that.
So, when we say right wingers are targeting "democracies", that is not a surprise. Communism and Socialism, at least in their theoretical form, are typically democratic because economically the goals of Socialism are for the WORKERS to be in charge of the means of production (a flattened out society) and Communism idealizes a classless, stateless, and moneyless society where power is decentralized and shared. Democracies, to varying degrees, try to institute "the will of the people", which again, is a flattened out mode of society, not a hierarchy as dictated by the "natural order" inherent in Conservative ideology.
Conservatives will "tolerate" democracy, unless it threatens their "god given" right to be in power at all times. If it becomes an obstacle, they will do away with it without any remorse or second thought.
