Crime Concerns Drove Asian Americans Away From New York Democrats.

One reason we lost house seats in NY.

Interviews with Asian American voters revealed that their discontent with the Democratic Party was, in many cases, deep-rooted and based on frustrations built over years. Many of them described becoming disillusioned with a party that they said had overlooked their support and veered too far to the left. They listed Democratic priorities related to education, criminal justice and illegal immigration as favoring other minority groups over Asian Americans, and blamed Democratic policies for a rise in certain crimes and for supporting safe injection sites.

and New York city. It's been pretty much all over the country. The democrats have to acknowledge this is going on and not run away from it. The more they do the more they will get disdain from Asians. This also gets multiplied when Asians see Affirmative action preventing them or their kids getting into elite schools. I don't have a clear-cut answer for how to fix these problems, but they are now magnified.

You're dismissing problems and telling them what's up out of your useful political perspective.

People don't tend to like that sort of thing.

And the community is highly, highly aware of it.

If I repeated what my Democratic AAPI in-laws and friends say about how our side has handled anti-Asian hate crimes, my post would probably be hidden.

It's a problem.

Many Asian Americans I know feel that colleges and elite high schools feel free to actively discriminate against them. They may agree that other minorities are underrepresented and should receive help, but they feel that the reforms always come at the expense of Asian Americans, and nobody ever cares.

The changes to the admissions systems at New York City's elite high schools hurt Asian American enrollment a lot. I wouldn't be surprised if that led to a change in voting patterns.

Why would we be blamed, it was Trump and the Republicans who ratcheted up the anti-Asian hatred during the pandemic.

and they feel democrats either don't condemn it as much or are not tough enough on crime as many of these people have criminal history.

in Virginia with two or three counties withholding news of academic awards until it was too late to get scholarships and those who were affected by this were mostly Asians.

Author and journalist Asra Q. Nomani, whose own son was affected by the “years-long” practice at Thomas Jefferson, broke the news in a City Journal piece last month, noting that those most affected were Asian Americans.

Asian Americans made up over 70% of the student body before the proposed changes. Under the changes, Asian American enrollment fell from 73% to 54%; every other measured group increased their enrollment.

Human nature isn't a difficult thing to perceive.

We should be supporting the community more in what they've been dealing with, because we haven't been very good on it so far. Unless the attacker is a right-winger, it's see no evil hear no evil.

That has to change. If we're silent to violence - and a lot of us have been - are we not complicit?

Can't please everybody. It's one group or another "punishing" the Democrats by shooting themselves in the foot. And not being part of it either. Be active in the party and make this known rather than sit back and say "they aren't doing enough for me."
