January Photo Contest thread 1

California Peggy won the privilege of selecting this month's theme.

The entrant takes a photo of anything they want, with some restrictions!

1) Those are that the photo be taken by cell phone ONLY.
2)AND that the photo has not been post-processed in ANY way.

So, one cell phone photo, right out of the camera! NO EDITING AT ALL.

This is a "level the playing field" contest. The idea is to remove any advantage that professional equipment or editing software may provide. Cell phones do a number of things very well, apply various corrective fixes without user input and in one respect are the best camera, that is, the one you have with you. Some phones offer in camera editing and the idea is to not even use that, as close to 'straight out of the camera' as we can get. Just you and your creative eye.

among the photos in each collection. You could give 5 photos 1 vote, or all five votes to one photo. The programming would have to check our arithmetic, and not allow us more than 5 (or however many) votes. I have no idea how hard this would be to set up, but I do regularly see more than one photo I'd like to vote for. So, I realize this is probably not worth the programmer's time, but I think it might result in a more accurate tally of how much enthusiasm each photo evokes.

Even if Earl G and Elad took the effort and it would be more or less invisible to the host, getting 16 hosts for contests each year is difficult as is. Anything that might add to the confusion or the possibility of participant/voter consternation would make it just that much more difficult for recruitment.

This was my second contest as host. The first was almost effortless except for a typo or two. This one was a more or less a disaster.

It's a fun activity for both photographers and viewers. Even hosts if we don't screw up. We call it a 'contest' but it's really just an excuse to share the things we've seen & places we've been. No prizes, no rewards. Just the opportunity to shape the next contest. I think KISS is the best policy.

Just my opinion.

I really hate to see any "contest" moderator encounter disaster; we need you. And I can easily imagine our picture viewers thrown into a state of confusion about what they're supposed to do, and then not doing anything. Thanks for explaining.

It's clear to me that in order to achieve what I want, which is more praise for the photographers, I will just have to work harder myself, and respond to individual pics in comments. Maybe I'll issue a disclaimer, and say "This comment does not mean I didn't admire your picture, it's just that this other picture is easier to talk about."

Once we make a decision to put our artwork before the public the art isn't up for critique, it's the taste of the viewer that's being judged . . .
