Papa Bush wouldn't recognize today's Republican party

And perhaps back in the day, you found Bush's policies to be repugnant. But he would be laughed out of today's GOP.

Of course they wouldn’t stand a chance in hell of getting the Republican nomination now.

To promise them arms if they'd hold hostages until after an election as trying to overthrow the country.

I also consider conspiring with the North Vietnamese to sabotage peace talks to end a disastrous war as trying to overthrow the country.

Two r thugs did that, just to win elections.

6. So it was someone else who pardoned the Iran/contra suspects?

I could have sworn it was a lame-duck President Poppy who pardoned Caspar Weinberger and five others in the dead of night on Christmas Eve 1992 just before they were to go to trial for trading arms for hostages and using the proceeds to fund the contras in Nicaragua. According to Lawrence Walsh's final report, that trial would have exposed the lie that Poppy was "out of the loop" on Iran/contra. But since all the right people agreed that Poppy had done the right thing and saved the nation from the horrifying spectacle of Republican criminality, nobody remembers that anymore.

There's a bright line connection between Poppy and today's Republican party, but all the right people agree that it's impolite to notice it.

...once he saw which way the wind was blowing. It's also what lost the '92 election for him.

So yes, he'd recognize the engine that brought Republicans victory. He'd probably also recognize the hesitancy to buck it by "his" type of Republicans that let it get loose from its mountings.
