Wyoming Luddites - We don't want no electric cars here

The State of Wyoming is considering phasing out the sales of electric vehicles by 2035 to “ensure the stability” of its oil and gas industry. Senators Jim Anderson, Brian Boner, Ed Cooper, Dan Dockstader, Representatives Donald Burkhart, Jr, and Bill Henderson sponsored the bill SJ0004.

In the bill, the group of politicians claimed that oil and gas production has been one of the state’s proud and valued industries, creating “countless jobs” and contributing “revenues to the state of Wyoming throughout the state’s history.”

...
The bill praises gas-powered vehicles for allowing the state’s industries and businesses to flourish and criticize the use of batteries in electric vehicles due to the critical minerals contained in them. The bill states that the minerals in the batteries are “not easily recyclable or disposable” and claimed that municipal landfills in the state would be required to develop safe and responsible disposal solutions for the minerals.

The bill then praises the oil and gas industry. It states: “The proliferation of electric vehicles at the expense of gas-powered vehicles will have deleterious impacts on Wyoming’s communities and will be detrimental to Wyoming’s economy and the ability for the country to efficiently engage in commerce.”

NOTE: SURPRISE, SURPRISE - all the sponsor's of the bill to phase out Electric Vehicles are Republicans

would Wyoming's cities start looking like Havana, with streets full of ancient, battered cars held together with duct tape? Would Wyoming's GOPers prohibit residents from even licensing an electric vehicle in the state? Would they outlaw the installation of electric power outlets at service stations to discourage outstate purchases of EVs and to prevent people from other states from driving through Wyoming in EVs?

Morons.

Maybe if the US government would lift it's travel ban on Americans they could see that for themselves instead of repeating the old tired canards.

There's a ton of revenue in those energy sources.

But Wyoming GOPers can't seem to wrap their heads around the lethal results of mining and burning fossil fuels.

The GOP is inexorably married to oil and gas. They are the marketing foundation-- the lobbyists-- for a dying industry.

The mining and burning of fossil fuels became a masculine form of capitalism that now endangers the the health and sustainability of the ecosphere. But hey! That's where the money is! So balls to the wall!

It is not a bill that, if passed by both houses of the Wyoming legislature and signed by the governor, would become Wyoming law.

It has as much legal effect as a resolution in support of motherhood, or displaying the American flag, or wishing a football team well.

SJ0004 - Phasing out new electric vehicle sales by 2035.

{snip}

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE MEMBERS OF THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF WYOMING:

Section 1. That the legislature encourages and expresses as a goal that the sale of new electric vehicles in the state of Wyoming be phased out by 2035.

Section 2. That the legislature encourages Wyoming's industries and citizens to limit the sale and purchase of new electric vehicles in Wyoming with a goal of phasing out the sale of new electric vehicles in Wyoming by 2035.

Section 3. That the Secretary of State of Wyoming transmit copies of this resolution to the President of the United States, each member of Wyoming's congressional delegation, the President of the United States Senate, the Speaker of the United States House of Representatives, the governor of Wyoming and the governor of California.

This is 40% of the US' output of coal.

These reps don't even know what their state mines or don't care about other Wyoming industries other than oil and gas. Pretty sad and this is bound to rankle some feathers of some Wyoming folks.

Most diesel trains drive an electric generator which charges onboard batteries that power the trucks that drive the train.

Electric only freight trains are generally limited to the east coast.
