General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsDoes anyone else here not care for endless supply of video links posted here??
In all honesty I rarely open them. Often I'm in a place where I can't open one or have the time to listen to an endless stream of News Drivel. I prefer getting my info in posts that are in text. I read rather quickly and waiting for a video to get to the point is something I have little patience for.

(1,766 posts)I have a hearing problem that makes it difficult sometimes to pick up words. The volume isn't the concern. I hear the volume just fine. The problem arises either from people who don't enunciate well, or from too much background noise going on for me to distinguish the voices properly. Voices get "lost in the shuffle" for me when there isn't enough "contrast" between spoken word and whatever's going on in the background.
It's an audio process disorder that's my problem, but it is a problem that makes videos especially onerous for me sometimes. I can never watch the Brady Bunch news panels talking over each other for that reason. That sounds like nothing but madness to me because I can't make out anything that's being said in those situations.

(3,017 posts)I can hear, but not well. Since most of these presenters have not received enough vocal training to have Lawrence Olivier or Katherine Hepburn levels of diction, they're lost on me.

I don't care for long commentary videos however. That is when I'd prefer to read an article. I see enough political commentary on television.
Everyone has their preferences, so it is no big deal to me if people post videos. I do like when posters give a summary of what the video is about though.

(35,176 posts)this is a large community and I would bet just as many and maybe more like the videos. I just got used to skipping them with an occasional eye roll because I can almost always ID them now and wonder if they (the people making the video) know how actually inflammatory and ridiculous they sound.
My main problem with them isn't that they are videos but so many say things in a manner that puts it all as critical to read or things like, "We KICKED his ass and he is GOING DOWN!" when essentially it is just a repeat of what we already know with swearing or freak out comments making the story just the same but with extra time spent. I skip those. You can usually spot them by looking at who posts them or just reading the caption..."Trump is OVER! The DOJ is getting ready to send him to his future cell!" lol, things like that.

(130,533 posts)at least if there's no explanation as to what it's about. It's kind of annoying to open a post and find only a video, usually with no description of what it's about besides the video's title, which usually is some tendentious clickbait announcement in caps that someone has been DEVASTATED or DESTROYED, which they never are, and you have to sit through a 20-minute production that some clickbaiter has produced on his iPhone in his parents' basement in order to find out that nobody has, in fact, been DEVASTATED or DESTROYED.
Please, posters of such videos, please stop, or at least post them in the videos forum.

(31,155 posts)The boy has cried wolf way too many times with me so they get completely avoided. And pretty much anything to do with Trump I avoid anymore because nothing seems to come of any of it. Hopefully, one of these days we see a video title that says "Breaking: Trump Indicted on 9 counts!" Until then I am done with all of them.
keopeli
(3,582 posts)protocol so video uploads require a video explanation, choosing a category, and a poster comment, the experience would be different. This way, there can be no "paste link and done" posts. All would have a category, description, and comments. It's not a perfect solution, but it's a start.
While I would much prefer an improved Video Forum, I can not say that the column of video links on the right side of the home page does not really bother me. But, because I know good content is hard to find, I rarely click on a video link (without description and comment from the OP).
Quixote1818
(31,155 posts)I kind of get it if you're upset at too many videos being posted in GD because that isn't where they belong, but if you mean those going in Video and Multimedia then you totally lost me. DU is set up for a variety of ways to get your information and you can just avoid that section if it isn't for you but a ton of people like it. I often play videos while I am working or cooking. I rarely see videos posted in GD so if that is what you are talking about I just don't see that big of an issue. I just clicked on the first 15 posts here and only saw one and it was a very short Twitter video and those usually are right to the point. If you open something in GD and there is a video then how hard is it to just click on the next thing you're interested in?
I will say that I have gotten to the point I almost never click on a video with hyperbolic titles as the title usually totally blows crap out of proportion. I pretty much avoid anything that says something like "Trump in big trouble". Nothing ever seems to come from any of those. If it says "Breaking! Trump Indicted!" I would most certanly click on that if it EVER happens. LOL

Have you shared your concerns in the Community Help Forum? No doubt there are others in the same boat that would welcome explanations on how to limit those information formats but dont know how to find it.
You can also use the search feature there to find if this issue has been addressed before. If it has, you may find some suggestions that could help you and others who have the same concerns, cope. There might be some insight found there, too.
The suggestions to trash the post, trash the Group and even putting the posters in permanent time out using full block and ignore are all all good suggestions.
If you need more help than that the Community Help Forum might give you that. Here's the link:
https://www.democraticunderground.com/?com=forum&id=1256
Lately it seems that many videos are accompanied by a transcripts that can be read in lieu of watching the entire video. I've used that feature to speed my way through the information especially if the video is dull as a doorknob.
If you're referring to the seemingly endless parade of Tweets, I feel your pain. It's been a double edged sword. Seems counterintuitive to send your readers off site while trying to maintain a robust readership of devoted community members like DU. There have been instances where I have followed Tweets, fallen in a rabbit hole and haven't come back.
Also, it degrades the content here to an extent, to me at least. I'm either flicking things off like bugs or rolling with the punches.
Goodluck, Woodswalker. I hope you find this helpful. Stay encouraged.

(42 posts)The vast majority of the videos are from talking head, pundits, who dont exercise any restraint in editing the length of what they are saying. Writing makes you exercise discipline in what you are saying. By contrast, flipping on the video camera allows the speaker to drone on without consequence. There are DUers who are hearing impaired and even more of us who don't have the time to watch 5-10 minutes (or more) of video to get the point that could be conveyed in a sentence or two.
So, I appreciate those who do post these with plenty of context and comment. The others? Not so much.

(22,590 posts)Yes, I'm being a little bit sarcastic here, lol. To be honest, I'm not a huge video fan myself, or at least not an indiscriminate one. (For one thing, I'm a very fast reader and don't always have the patience to wait for a video to get to the point.) But there are some videos that I really enjoy and appreciate, and I've gotten pretty good at figuring out which ones those are and ignoring the rest. It is slightly annoying to click on a post that I can't tell is going to be a video, but only slightly. I have a fast enough internet connection that it takes very little time to click back out of a post and move on.
I know for a fact that there are a lot of people here who love the videos, and for that reason, they're not going anywhere. There's no way a site like this will ever match up perfectly with each individual user's personal preferences, and for me that simply means focusing on what I enjoy and find useful and ignoring the stuff that doesn't interest me. I recommend this approach, but I realize it may not not work for everyone.

One thing that is changing is the internet in that speeds are so much faster.
I never had anything other than a dial up connection until 2017. There were no better local commercial options for internet access. Pretty much impossible to live stream anything. Since 2017 have had Excede turned to ViaSat and replaced by HughesNet Satellite in 2021. The best I can stream YouTube videos or Amazon Prime is 360p and there are usually buffering problems during high internet use periods of late afternoon and evening. But Hughes is far superior to ViaSat in dependability and service.
