(3,015 posts)With all of the ups and down of US-Japanese relations, Tokyo remains grateful to General Douglas MacArthur and the US Occupation for not only cementing democracy in Japan, maintaining the Emperor, but helping reconstruct their devastated economy. For decades, Japan had the second largest economy in the world, only overtaken by China just a few years back.
The Japanese are a polite people and probably won't publicly respond to Mr Medvedev's idiotic and undiplomatic comments. But what the Japanese people may be thinking about Mr Medvedev is "Jigou jitoku", meaning "one gets what one deserves."
Lastly, Japan and Russia have yet to sign a peace treaty to memorialize their Joint Declaration of 1956. This will not help negotiations to settle the decades-long Kuril Islands dispute. The Kremlin has been fortifying these islands north of Japan with missile systems for five years now.

(3,015 posts)BTW: The Russo-Japanese War, the Russian Civil War, and the Russo-Finnish Wars are instructive towards today's Russo-Ukrainian War in many ways. Some may argue the Second World War is equally instructive, but I might disagree with that.

Japan issued a declaration of war on 8 February 1904.[50] However, three hours before Japan's declaration of war was received by the Russian government, and without warning, the Imperial Japanese Navy attacked the Russian Far East Fleet at Port Arthur.[51]
Tsar Nicholas II was stunned by news of the attack. He could not believe that Japan would commit an act of war without a formal declaration, and had been assured by his ministers that the Japanese would not fight. When the attack came, according to Cecil Spring Rice, first secretary at the British Embassy, it left the Tsar "almost incredulous".[52]
