Associated PressHe said Sunday that cities where immigrants are flowing to need help from the Federal Emergency Management Agency.
Our cities are being undermined. And we dont deserve this. Migrants dont deserve this. And the people who live in the cities dont deserve this, Adams said as he wrapped up a weekend visit to El Paso. We expect more from our national leaders to address this issue in a real way.
Adams said New York City has been overwhelmed. Since last spring, New York City has welcomed about 40,000 asylum seekers, and last week they saw a record of close to 840 asylum seekers arriving in one day, according to Adams.

(9,124 posts)I can always, always tell which party is in power based on what is being said about immigration. Always.
If it's a Republican, we care a lot. About conditions. About asylum hearings. About allowing people in or barring them. About Dreamers and unattended children. Republicans pretend they'll build a wall and do very little.
If our party is in power, we get real, real, real quiet. Then Republicans rev up and start highlighting how many people are coming in, every stray crime by an undocumented immigrant in the cities, sanctuary things.
Both sides will bang drums about immigration reform. Neither will do too much. And part of me thinks this is by design, because corporations and businesses benefit from the dysfunction.
Notice how the biggest stories about immigration people in our spaces have seemed to care about are when two asshole Republican governors were being shitty.
Otherwise, cricccckets.
And it's why things don't get done. Unless it's politically useful to highlight things, people would rather ignore them. You laid it out right there. "Why are we bothering about this because politics . . ."
Yes, let's not say obvious things, address problems, or make too much noise about a broken immigration system. Republicans might say something. I guess we'll wait til, I dunno, an election's coming up . . . how does 2037 look on everyone's calendar?

(4,876 posts)I disagree that when we are in power we are quiet. Perhaps you and I get our information from different sources. I suspect that Adams visit to Texas will just be used to increase the GOP calls for walls. Maybe he had tried and failed, but I wonder if Adams couldnt have coordinated an effort with others in his position to make his case. IMO it could be a more powerful argument.
