(18,372 posts)Or at least that was how it worked at my two employers where we had classified documents. They are stored in a separate safe - I can't imagine how they would tag along with someone's stuff when they leave a job.
Also I can't imagine retaining employer documents after leaving employment. I have left three employers in my career, and I carried no paperwork besides my personnel file out. When I retire in five to eight years it will also be so.

(25,216 posts)totally legitimately ... and two of the documents in their possession were subsequently classified. The person had no knowledge of the reclassification. When the documents were discovered and the issue became known, they simply cooperated with an investigation. The documents were returned, the process examined and corrected, and everyone went their happy merry ways.
For any number of reasons, this happens too commonly. It's what happens when it is discovered that is important.

(15,600 posts)These are "Classified"
For Official Use Only) documents I needed to do my work.
No Secret documents, those stayed on base in the proper storage areas for that level of classification. After I was done with them, I would get permission to take them back to the base office and either re-file or shred them.
It might be possible that there is a page of a brief that might have fallen out of a folder that is still in the back of my file cabinet.
So, after this post, I'll unlock the sucker and pull all my drawers out to check.
