Democrats respond to GOP calls for debt ceiling negotiations: No

Last edited Tue Jan 17, 2023, 09:12 PM - Edit history (1)

Kevin McCarthy, the Freedom Caucus and his fellow idiots think that they have President Biden and the Senate Democrats over the barrel. McCarthy and the Freedom Caucus are WRONG.

https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/maddowblog/democrats-respond-gop-calls-debt-ceiling-negotiations-no-rcna65944

A day earlier, the new House speaker told reporters that, as far as he’s concerned, there’s no need to wait until the last minute: President Joe Biden, McCarthy said, should begin the process now of negotiating with GOP leaders and making them happy so as to avoid a default.

Democrats are not just rejecting Republicans’ demands, the party that controls the White House and the Senate are also explicitly rejecting the very idea of negotiations. The Washington Post reported:

Congress must raise the debt limit “without conditions,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said Friday, soon after Treasury Secretary Janet L. Yellen announced that her agency will begin “extraordinary measures” next week to prevent the United States government from defaulting on its payment obligations. “We will not be doing any negotiation over the debt ceiling,” Jean-Pierre said.

In the same press briefing, Jean-Pierre added that the process “should be done without conditions. And that’s how we see this process moving forward.” She again reiterated, “There’s going to be no negotiation over it.”

Jean-Pierre was clearly articulating a position held by all Democratic leaders. Brian Deese, director of the National Economic Council, also said on Friday, “It’s a sacred obligation, the full faith and credit of the United States, and Congress is going to have to deal with the debt limit, and do so without conditions, without games, and without putting our economy at risk.”

For context, roughly 25% of our total national debt incurred over the last 230 years actually occurred during the 4 years of the Trump administration. That’s right, 25% of our entire national debt, all during the Trump administration.

And both times after being made a fool by their own reps they had to find just enough GOP house members to pass it with the Democrats. There's no reason to think Kevin has some magic that Ryan didn't, and he simply does not have enough GOP members of the house to ever pass any debt ceiling deal no matter what it is. Ryan never did.

But can they find the 5 or 6 necessary to pass it? I'm not confident any of the so called 'moderates' have the spine to buck MAGA crowd.

https://www.politico.com/news/2023/01/12/biden-debt-ceiling-gop-00077687

Still, there is rising concern that a significant faction of the Republican House is committed to a prolonged standoff over the debt ceiling — and even if a deal is reached to avoid default, the game of chicken could roil the markets and crash the economy.

There are reports that the Problem Solvers want to draft bipartisan budget cuts To appease the Insurrectionist Caucus into lifting the debt ceiling.

Some Republicans say default is not an option, but none have called for the “clean” increase Democrats want.

“I will tell you that we will not allow our country to default on our debt,” said Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick, R-Pa., who co-chairs the bipartisan Problem Solvers Caucus. “The full faith and credit of the United States is what gives us the position we hold in the world. So that’s off the table. We’re not going to default. We cannot allow ourselves to default.”

Fitzpatrick said he’s already discussing options with Rep. Josh Gottheimer, D-N.J., the PSC’s Democratic co-chair, about how to raise the debt ceiling.

1) A Discharge Petition to bring a clean bill to the floor, the “going around McCarthy” path, AND

2) A plan by the Problem Solvers, including Gottheimer, to to draft a “bipartisan” bill, containing budget cuts, that is acceptable to the handful of Dems on the PS caucus, as well as a majority of Republicans. THAT goes against the Biden policy of NO NEGOTIATIONS.

that DEM Josh G. is going to agree to budget cuts. NOWHERE.

Even GOP Brian F. says that there is no way for him to allow a default and a 10 year plan is still too strict.

Brian F. is going to work with DEM Josh G. so a default won't happen.

There is no indicationin the piece that said Josh G. is going to roll over as you suggest.
Your summary is pure speculation without any substance.

Fitzpatrick is quoted as saying he’s already talking to Gottheimer regarding potential cuts.

So, unless Fitzpatrick is lying (Gottheimer hasn’t issued a denial), then they are negotiating, which is in opposition to the Biden administration’s policy.

Gottheimer has a record of attempting to water down legislation, in particular, Biden’s legislative agenda (see BBB).

The rest of your argument is just hair splitting.

how about this. All of us send a small bottle of Ketchup to Mar-a-lago (via the USPS for extra laughs) Could you imagine the shit fit tantrum Trump would have, with USPS tractor trailer after tractor trailer dumping the load of ketchup packages off on the lawn of Mar-A-Lago....
Use a return address of his supporters and wealthy donors so the can't NOT open them....

Doonesbury, back in days of HW's "occupation" of the White House declared that he had a residence in Texas, despite him not owning any real estate what-so-ever in the State of Florida. The Governor sent a statement to Washington D.C., telling them HW had a residence in Texas and therefore DC couldn't collect their State Income Tax????? from Bush.

Doonesbury published a coupon in his cartoon, that readers all over the U.S. could send to the Governor or Texas, proclaiming they too wanted the same tax exemption???? that he granted Bush.........Over the next week, like 250,000 of them were sent to the Texas Governors's office.

Large mail bags after mail bags, were unloaded on the Governor's office.......It was reported in all the news and it was hysterically funny.

Perhaps, when we are upset about something, we should do the same. Not send emails that they can just push a button the Republicans can delete in masse.......And, not phone calls that they can just not answer.

Actual letters, by the Millions, from the 80+ million Biden Voters , sent by USPS of course (to help out those workers and their Postal Employees Union.......)

We need to get down and dirty to match their tactics.....and have some fun while we are at it......LOL
