NY-03: The Shadow Race to Replace George Santos Has Already Begun

Rep. George Santos hasn’t resigned. He hasn’t even publicly said that he won’t run for re-election in 2024. But the shadow race to replace him has already begun.

In New York’s 3rd Congressional District, which Santos continues to represent despite growing calls to step down, political operators on both sides of the aisle are plotting their next moves.

Republicans are clamoring to find a candidate with an immaculate, bulletproof résumé who can patch up the Long Island GOP’s scarred reputation. Democrats are looking for someone who can lead their comeback—an emboldened move to flip the district back to blue after Santos dyed it red.

The timing is complicated. Santos could resign any day now. And if he did, it would spark a special election, where party leaders would pick their own candidates. Santos has remained adamant he won’t resign unless all 142,673 voters who voted for him call on him to do so—a purposely impossible goalpost to track.

If Santos doesn’t resign and serves out his full term, that would only buy him roughly a year before a primary circuit in the district would begin, when hordes of Democrats and Republicans would openly vie to replace him.

Once unable to vote to support McCarthy, Santos will be expelled and a new election will take place. Brazil has already asked for his extradition. Either he is extradited to Brazil or he is brought up on criminal charges here. If here, wonder who would post bail for him? US is already following the money.

They have not even revived charges against him. If they do the penalty for a guilty verdict in Brazil is a fine. No one gets extradited for a fine.

is gong to resign on his own.. his masters' who put him in there wouldn't like that.

They should have insisted he Tone Down his Stupid LIES, though.. Brings Too Much Attention to what he's there for.

plus perks - and all he has to do is occasionally show up and vote like Kevin tells him. Why should he give that up?

I'm waiting for the stories about his sleeping in his office because no one in DC will rent him an apartment. But I suspect I'll be waiting a long time.

He critical to the house majority, and a special election's risk far outweighs its benefits.

As long as he votes how he's told to, when he's told to, and where he's told to, he'll be their (another) Drunken Uncle We Politely Ignore on Holidays. GOP rank and file are likely just hoping he keeps his head down and avoids the press when and if possible.

I think the GOP is already looking to 2024 where they can manufacture his resignation (and the district he represents) and his replacement on their terms.
