In an interview on Fox Businessconducted at the annual gathering of corporate and political elites in Davos, Switzerlandthe West Virginia Democrat said that "we have a debt problem" and argued members of both parties should "work together" on solutions. The senator singled out Social Security, even though the program can't by law add to long-term deficits.

The problem, from the perspective of Social Security defenders, is Manchin's suggested avenue for reforms: Bipartisan congressional committees that critics have denounced as "a Trojan horse to cut seniors' benefits."
***
Alex Lawson, the executive director of Social Security Works, told Common Dreams that President Joe Biden should "reiterate his commitment to only signing a clean debt limit increase, and specifically rule out a closed-door commission designed to cut Social Security," in response to the West Virginia Democrat's comments.
"Manchin is providing cover for Republican attacks on Social Security and Medicare," Lawson said. "Democrats must stand with President Biden in his calls for a clean debt ceiling [increase] and an end to Republican attacks on our earned benefits."

(34,285 posts)go OUT OF THEIR way to vote for those DEDICATED to taking away their SS and Medicare, then we deserve to lose it all I guess.
If you disagree, (Not you the OP, in general) are you ready to have a reaction to the cons that is COMMENSURATE to their actions?

...I've been doing the Paul Revere thing on this since the 2020 election. This didn't happen overnight..Republicans have been telegraphing their punches for a LONG time. And voters empowered them to do it.
And yes, the Senate won't pass the cuts, and President Biden has already vowed to veto any cuts Republicans came up with if they actually made it to his desk. But if voters elect a Republican president in 2024, and Republicans hold their House majority and make gains in the Senate, I'd plan on kissing both programs goodbye.

(23,236 posts)Nationally, 63% of young voters voted for Dem candidates. Even though young voter turnout was just 27% in 2022 (31% in swing states), their turnout has gradually been increasing, if turnout can be increased by even just 5-10%, it could make a huge difference.

Anyone who ignores or discounts the youth vote, especially in favor of throwing resources at White Boomer voters who hang out in swing state diners deserves to lose.

Funny thing is, I bet Manchin, along with Sinema, will vote for an exception to the filibuster rule to ram through the SS cuts with 49 republicans in the senate after the house passes them.

(7,046 posts)She got it when she ran as a progressive Democrat to win election to the House, and again to the Senate.

(23,273 posts)As I said above, a Republican president in 2024 would be a guarantee of both programs becoming a thing of the past.

My grandfather grew up in WV. He liked to joke that everyone in WV had one leg short than the other because they always stood on the side of a hill.
That grandfather had one leg shorter than the other because he survived polio has a child that left him with a slightly twisted spin and a bad leg. He would be beside himself listening to the anti-vaxxers.

(23,715 posts)the seniors who vote rethug obviously don't want these things, so let's make it mandatory if you vote for rethugs it also opts you out of SS/Medicare. that would go a long way to shoring up the system! and any surplus can just be doled out to the people that want it.
i'm being facetious of course but it pisses me off thinking of every senior that votes rethug because "WoKe iS EviL" that is cashing these checks KNOWING rethugs want to end the system. wish there was a way to just single THEM out and say "okay, this is the people you want to elect? okay, you get exactly what you wish for!"
