NPR correspondent calls out @Cigna for not approving a PET scan for her 2 year old child with cancer

https://www.npr.org/people/984821709/sandhya-dirks

after the mother's tweet went viral @Cigna finally decided to approve the PET scan. I EFFING HATE HEALTH INSURANCE COMPANIES.

others chimed in with their similar stories too.

My baby's cancer may have returned and my insurance,
@Cigna
, is refusing to help cover a PET scan so we can find out if it has, and if needed, continue our work to save his life. No qualms about putting my child's life on the line for their bottom line. He is not even 2 years old

I doubt it will happen in my lifetime. We’re the only industrialized country in the world with this mess..it was taken care of many years ago except for here where the bottom line is profits, not people

Do what mine did and collaborate with another doc to order a test that wasn’t as thorough but could work. They refused my drs order for a pet scan as a follow up after treatment because “You’ve had treatment. You’ve had surgery. There’s no more cancer.” This was after treatment for a recurrence after 15 yrs (endometrial cancer) - Blue Cross / Blue Shield Highmark.

Even after an interview, Dr C couldn’t get it approved. So he ordered a full CT scan with IV and barium contrast, and a second set without contrast. Thankfully it showed no change in the lung nodule they’ve been watching for the past 2 yrs, and shrinkage of the wonky enlarged paraortic lymph node located in an inoperable location.

I hate insurance, but we have the best we can afford. The State of Delaware is pushing Medicare advantage on its employees. They’ve given us a Year reprieve because they got caught pushing it through without the appropriate notifications/vote.

Yes we all have what we can afford but they still try hard to short change us and deprive us of care.
