Iowa GOP introduces bill requiring teachers to out trans students before offering support

A new bill introduced in the Iowa House on Wednesday seeks to bar educators from supporting transgender students, and require teachers to "out" students to their parents.

HF 9 would prohibit educators and school staff from supporting transgender students without parental notification.

Another measure introduced Wednesday, HF 8, would prohibit instruction on gender identity or sexual orientation in school districts and charter schools in kindergarten through grade three.

Iowa Safe Schools released a statement on the new bills Wednesday morning, highlighting the exceptional dangers faced by trans students who could be outed to unsupportive or abusive parents.

The organization also argues such measures would undermine affirming pronoun practices in Iowa schools, a practice they say reduces the risk of suicide in transgender and nonbinary youth by 50%.

Picking on kids! Kids! Some of the most vulnerable ones, too. Every day is a new story illustrating how low the Republican Party has sunk & I have a harder & harder time reconciling the decent people I know who still identify as republicans. How can decent people support this party?
