Sen. Lindsey Graham urged the US and Germany to send tanks to the Ukrainian military during a visit to Kyiv on Friday, as Western defense officials meeting in Germany failed to agree on sending the weapons.
The South Carolina Republican visited Ukraine along with Democratic Sens. Richard Blumenthal of Connecticut and Sheldon Whitehouse of Rhode Island. The three lawmakers, who have been supportive of sending additional aide to Ukraine, met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
"All three of us, one Republican and two Democrats, share the same goal for Ukraine to drive the Russians out of Ukraine. To achieve that goal, the Ukrainian military needs tanks," Graham said during a press conference after the meeting and on Twitter. "I am tired of the shit show surrounding who is going to send tanks and when are they going to send them. Putin is trying to rewrite the map of Europe by force of arms. World order is at stake."

What a hypocrite this guy is! I guess it depends on which shit show he's looking at as being acceptable. Ukraine needs tanks but Graham is hardly the guy to lead the way on this.

I hope this conflict of interest rips him to shreds.

(9,970 posts)... I understand this opinion... but, looking at the bigger picture, isn't there anyone able to assist Senator Graham? He must have money... family... friends... he really should be in private retirement.

(13,624 posts)main reason Ukraine would need tanks. The Russians have thousands of them but how many can be deployed or actually make it very far without breaking down? They already had a major cluster with their heavy vehicle tires being defective.
The Ukrainians need anything that can deal with Russian artillery, missiles and drones. I would think the Russians could have a lot of infantry with the kind of anti-armor rockets the Ukrainians have used so well against their armor. If they don't, that is a huge mistake. They make what is supposed to be a pretty good one. They have one similar to our javelin too.
A tank is a big expensive target. It would suck to have them start losing a bunch of them. If you control the sky and have eliminated threats that make it safe to move tanks out in the open, you don't need the tanks. It might be better for them to get more lighter vehicles with lots of firepower.

And he did a lot of stiff for DARPA until he recently retired, one current impasse is due to Scholz looking for any excuse not to piss off Putin further, while not looking foolish at home. He has said he wont send the most modern German tanks unless the Americans send their most modern tanks.
The trouble is that the American tanks run on a special kind of rocket fuel unavailable at the Ukrainian front, and nearly impossible to supply to a constantly moving front line. If a fuel depot is hit, every one of those tanks within a 200 KM radius is immobilized. The German tanks run on diesel, which is available everywhere. Scholz might as well say he wont send his tanks unless we send submarines.
**on editI got one part wrong. Our Abrams M-1 tanks CAN be adapted to run on diesel, but they have extremely sophisticated software that requires extensive training before it can be operated, and no Ukrainians are yet competent with its use. Another political complication is that while the German Leopard tanks are standard throughout NATO, the Germans retain full authority over any transfers of them outside of the country where they are stationed, and they are not granting any such permission at this time

(11,652 posts)He forgets who owns him. He will be reminded and start towing the Putin line again in a day or so. Reminds me of his famous "enough is enough" speech after January 6th that he completely forsook within hours.
