General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWell, I am off the never had COVID list.
Have no idea how I got it. Husband is negative. Sore throat (fiercely sore), nagging cough, sleeping a lot.
Just got Paxlovid which was free. And good cough medicine for which I would gladly have paid more than $10.99. If you have never taken Tessalon Perles for cough, they are effective. I wanted to hug the NP's neck when she suggested them, but I stayed far away.

(15,878 posts)I'm a gear head so working on all these neat million dollar machines was great fun...
I liked the interaction with patients but unlike you It was a quick turn around.
I saw the patient for about an hour or so and "next".
Hope you feel better..

(8,595 posts)What is this "Tessalon Perles"? Widely available OTC, or? Never heard of it.

(32,010 posts)I was instructed by my doc to take them incorrectly and it went very badly.

(5,119 posts)The cough from inflammation in my throat interrupted my sleep for a few days. It sounds like you are on track with the proper cough suppressant. Wishing you a quick recovery.
is just a strange bird. When I had it I had no hint of a sore throat, it started out feeling like allergies, major sneezing. I coughed for one day, not very badly. The person I got it from had the sore throat for days and the cough for two weeks.

(17,932 posts)years ago having a cold and it started with a super burning sensation in the back of my throat. Almost felt like I wasnt going to be able to swallow. Luckily that lasted just part of a day. Horrible sensation though.

(5,119 posts)But, it is not possible to accomplish such identification. I am thinking that each of us is predisposed to developing individualized symptoms to common respiratory viruses, not no mention novel viruses like COVID.

(17,932 posts)interesting, but I think this was back in the late 1980s or early nineties.

(32,010 posts)so I did, in the car on the way home. I immediately started foaming from the mouth and neck, had to pull over, almost choked and died.
That may have left me with an an unfavorable opinion of the medication.
Sorry about your covids. I'm still a unicorn and starting to wonder if I can get it at all, given the MASSIVE exposure (so many patients and coworkers) I've had to it.

(7,549 posts)Sorry you got bad advice.
The NP said the numbers were up and most people had no idea where they got it.
Had lunch with friends Monday, notified them and all are well.

(32,010 posts)He heard about it when I got home. I have his cell number.
it up and it clearly says to swallow it immediately. Dont chew or hold in mouth.

(28,299 posts)so I never actually tried it. Most coughs that I get respond well to dextromethorphan that's in NyQuil. If that's not sufficient, then some type of opiate.
Still waiting to get Covid.

(55,137 posts)Hubby and I are still Covid virgins. I'm retired and hate people so it's not hard to understand my virginity..... But hubby works around a bunch of people who've gotten it and he's never gotten it.
Hope it's quick and your symptoms get no worse.

(114,692 posts)prescribed. This med is safe in doses of 100 mg 3x daily, but never more than 200 mg at a time or more than 600 mg in a single day. It can be highly toxic above those levels (and keep it out of reach of children). Unfortunately, I have seen some serious consequences of overdosing.
Seriously. It can be effective and with paranoia, over the use of any narcotic cough suppressive agents it is seemingly come back in "style" but please be careful and take those maximum doses seriously.
Sorry about your contracting COVID-19. I knock on wood every day, but I did contract RSV a few weeks ago (lab-confirmed). It isn't pleasant but far less concerning for me than COVID>

(114,692 posts)because of reluctance to prescribe codeine, butorphanol or other narcotics as anti-tussives (i.e., that means cough suppressant activity). Read more closely, please. I know of what I speak. This is my expertise.
Ms. Toad
(38,824 posts)Your explanation in this post is clear. It was not clear in the post to which I responded.
hlthe2b
(114,692 posts)make an issue not there. READ MORE CLOSELY This is not your area of expertise. IT IS MINE.
Ms. Toad
(38,824 posts)I spent several years teaching graduate level writing. I responded because your original explanation was not clear.
If I read it as saying that benzonatate was a narcotic (which was being prescribed again over the concern (i.e. in spite of the concern) about narcotics), others will read it that way, as well.
hlthe2b
(114,692 posts)And you certainly do not have the background or expertise to be questioning me on this. Lawyers do not have DEA licenses. I do. Had you asked about what you didn't understand I would have been happy to educate you. But your accusation, sans expertise, is beyond ridiculous.
Ms. Toad

(114,692 posts)that was helpful to you (and needed). You are quite welcome.
Now, if you will continue to read the posts closely and what is written without making outlandish assumptions or inserting that which is not there, I think things will go much better for you. Have a good evening.

Very expensive drive for her.
Been about 5 days and we both test negative, so far.

No, he has no symptoms.
The NP I saw said most people they were seeing could not ID a source either.

(7,549 posts)Luckily, I am retired and can rest as much as I need and want.
This is probably the worst sore throat I have had as an adult...I told the NP that when I swallow, it hurts from ear to ear. She seemed familiar with the complaint. But my lungs are clear, not having trouble breathing, it could be so much worse.
If you start to have symptoms...test and find out so you can get going with treatment. Do not wait.
I will say that soup and pudding and tonight mac and cheese go down pretty easily..on a sore throat.

(73 posts)I was beginning to think my husband and I were immune. We had had casual contact with people who got Covid, including our adult son who lives with us. We avoided it until the week before Christmas. Both early 60s and very mild cases. Hubby had the flu right after Covid, and the flu was worse for him, though it was also mild.
