At 10:20 a.m. on January 22, Torrance police officers spotted the van, Luna said. The van entered a shopping center, and officers then heard a single gunshot coming from inside the van, Luna said. Tran is from Hemet,a city in Riverside County, California, according to The Los Angeles Times.

At 12:52 a.m., the sheriff’s SWAT team cleared the van and determined the suspect “sustained a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” Luna said, adding that authorities confirmed the suspect was the mass shooter. A handgun was discovered inside the van, according to the sheriff.

I was like - that guy is older than "30 - 50". Many non-European ethnicities are actually older than they "look" ( "look" in quotes because over the decades, there seems to have been some kind of implied standard established through ad imagery that supposedly defines age by appearance expectations (e.g., based on wrinkles, amount of gray hair, and other characteristics) and that only works mostly with European-ancestry.

A Las Vegas man suspected in Sunday’s shooting that left one person dead and five others injured at a meeting of Asian churchgoers in Southern California was motivated by political tensions between China and Taiwan, authorities said Monday.

David Chou, 68, has been booked into jail on recommended charges of one count of murder and five counts of attempted murder, the Orange County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement.

Kristi Johnson, the assistant director in charge of the FBI’s Los Angeles office, said at a news conference Monday afternoon that a federal hate crimes investigation had been opened against Chou to determine whether additional charges can be brought.

Orange County Sheriff Don Barnes said the briefing that the was shooting “a politically motived hate incident." Barnes said Chou, an U.S. citizen from China, "was upset about political tensions between China and Taiwan."
