Democrats in Mississippi are feeling optimistic that their party will be able to oust Gov. Tate Reeves (R) from the governors mansion this fall after Democrat Brandon Presleys recent entry in the race.
Reeves has suffered from low approval ratings and has been name-checked at times in the states long-running welfare scandal, but the governorship has proved elusive for Democrats in the red state for decades.
The party believes this time will be different. They say Presley, the states northern district public service commissioner and a distant relative of Elvis Presley, has an ability to connect with rural voters and that hes proven he can win elections in some of the reddest parts of the state.
There is not a better retail politician in the state of Mississippi, period. He knows how to connect with voters. He knows how to listen to voters, which I think is an underrated skill in a politician, said Democratic strategist Brannon Miller, whose firm has worked with Presleys campaign previously but is not involved in the gubernatorial race at this time.
As a Democrat, you cant be anything but optimistic about a person like that, he added.

(19,066 posts)I know we tend to think of certain states as lost causes, but no matter what the state, there are still a good number of good Dems who love our democracy living there.
We cannot dismiss people in Mississippi as being a lost cause because it's a red state. Ditto with Florida.
I'm from Michigan, not long ago here, Michigan was starting to be dismissed as a red state. In 2016 it went for Trump, had Republicans as our governor, SoS, AG, and Republicans held both houses in the state government, a majority on the state Supreme Court, and sent 8 of our 14 delegates to the US House. 6 short years later and it's Dem control of everything in this state. A clean sweep.
Don't give up on Mississippi or any other red state, there are pockets of hope everywhere.
