After years of turmoil, Michigan Gov. Whitmer looks to shape an ambitious Democratic agenda

After spending the better part of her first term ferrying Michigan through the biggest confluence of public health, economic and political turmoil the state has seen in decades — and keeping a publicly cool head through all of it — it’s hard not to wonder if the protagonist of her favorite film, Jeff “The Dude” Lebowski, might have rubbed off a bit of wisdom.
“I will tell you, through all the ups and downs in the last four years, the phrase ‘The Dude abides’ has served me well,” Whitmer said in an interview.
The mantra of Jeff Bridge’s iconic character from cult-classic “The Big Lebowski” is about going with the flow; rolling with the punches. And when asked how she’s changed since becoming governor in 2019, there’s an aspect of that.
“I’ve got thicker skin,” Whitmer said. “I have an ability to take things as they come.”
Between natural disasters, a global pandemic and, most personally, becoming the target of a kidnapping and possible assassination plot, she admits “it’s been a lot more challenging than I could have ever fathomed.”
