Never again: How a 'lesson of 2011' shaped Biden's no-negotiation stance on debt limit

https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/congress/debt-ceiling-deadline-biden-negotiate-2011-near-default-rcna67854

'The Obama-Biden White House agreed to negotiate with Republicans on the debt ceiling. It brought the U.S. economy to the brink of disaster — and the president and vice president vowed to change their posture.

Twelve years later, Biden is executing on that lesson as he faces down a new Republican-controlled House that is similarly demanding spending cuts as a concession for extending the debt ceiling. He says there won’t be any negotiations, and Congress must allow the government to pay its bills. “I will not let anyone use the full faith and credit of the United States as a bargaining chip,” Biden said Thursday in Virginia.'

Biden’s gonna need all the support he can get, and there are some in congress who will need…encouragement…to keep their spines stiff through what is sure to be a nail biter.

I’m looking at you, Josh Gottheimer.

They will talk shit, they might event let the vote lapse, but in the end they will crumble as soon as the bad press starts trashing them.

Good point. Right after the coup attempt we saw a lot of the corporations which (not who) run the US saying that they would not support politicians who supported the coup. That didn't last long because the bottom line was that the US public didn't demand with our dollars that companies not donate to insurrectionist politicians. But the economy is another matter. Hopefully the corporate oligarchs who want the economy to keep spinning will pull the strings of enough of their Republican marionettes to join with Democrats in raising the debt limit.

This "new", un-questionably, Fascist Group of so-called "Republicans" has to be stopped from their continued Extortion, BlackMailing,

and Corruption, to introduce their Un-American agenda in obliterating Democracy, and destroying the Constitution....

8. dems should quote from limbaugh, republicans chief economist, when he spent much of july 2011

urging them to push all the way to the deadline aug 2. that would blame the dead guy and that closest thing to a moral and ‘intellectual’ leader the republicans have had the last .

limbaugh should be waved under their nose so they and media know where these idiots got their econ 101 from

here are some quotes from july 2011 in which he repeatedly told his idiot dittohead teabag trumper audience that the US could not default, and if it did it would force obama to make cuts. there were a lot more to choose from.

"Social Security checks will continue to go out."
"we're being lied to by the Ruling Class left and right about the debt ceiling and what happens if it's not raised.”

"When you boil it all down, here's the point: big cutting. It will occur automatically."

“If there is a collapse or a default, it's something that he (Obama) wants and has planned.”
“And if -- if -- the Republicans go along at some point, they're contributing to the destruction of our economy.”

july 27 "There isn't gonna be any default and there probably won't be a downgrade. All of this is hocus-pocus.
