How does it happen that someone dies of blood loss (internal injuries) when they've been in the hospital for three days. Can they stop the bleeding at the hospital?

(53,339 posts)I would imagine that there was a bleed that they couldn't find or fix. I know in my case I am on blood thinners which makes bleeds more threatening to me but given his age that is unlikely.

(113,202 posts)tremendous damage to internal organs that may not show up for a couple of days leading to kidney, liver failure, and traumatic damage to intestines/stomach/colon that can lead to sepsis (overwhelming infection). And that doesn't count the possibility of micro clots that can develop (thrombi) that can travel to the lungs causing a fatal pulmonary embolus.

(18,769 posts)Because the liver has many large blood vessels, the main problem resulting from liver injury is severe bleeding. Nearly all bleeding from a liver injury occurs within the abdominal cavity.
