West Virginia advances school mandate on 'In God We Trust'

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) — Public schools in West Virginia may soon be required to display the phrase “In God We Trust” in every building if a bill passed by the state Senate on Monday becomes law.

The bill was introduced by Republican Sen. Mike Azinger, who said he wants to give kids in schools something to look up to and let them know it's OK to “say God” in school.

“We know there’s a lot of kids that have problems at home, tough times at home that we don’t know anything about,” Azinger said, speaking on the Senate floor. “Maybe they’ll look up one day and say, ‘In God We Trust’ and know they can put their hope in God.”

The bill is now heading to the West Virginia House of Delegates. It requires public K-12 schools and public institutions of higher learning to display the official U.S. national motto on durable posters or in frames placed in a “conspicuous place” in each building.

I wouldn’t worship that monster even if it actually existed.

At least in polytheism you can blame bad stuff on mean gods and thank good gods for good stuff.

Yahweh is just a giant prick who gets his jollies by killing and maiming and inflicted suffering. Oh, but at the same time, “God is love.” 🙄

IGWT wasn't a motto until 1956.

One summer when I was a camp counselor, one of my campers wanted to go swimming but couldn't because she was having her period. This was a girl of nine who had started her monthlies earlier than some. She was asked if she wanted a tampon to use but informed me that "Tampons fall out". Again, this child was nine years old.

I stood there shocked for a second. I then asked her to explain.

It eventually came out that her mother's boyfriend was raping her.

I took the matter to my boss who told me, "Let's worry about her soul and pray to God for her" (and not do anything about what was happening to her body. Nothing. Ignore it. Pretend we didn't know.).

I left camp that day, went home, called the police and reported what happened.

"In God We Trust" being a beacon of hope to someone being repeatedly raped?

Or physically abused?

Or tortured?

By your parents/relatives/teacher/preacher?

Seriously?

Fuck that noise.

I hope it helped the little girl. She obviously wasn't getting any help at home.
Hopefully she (and her mother) received some much-needed counseling.

Good job, Solly Mack!

I was sickened by what was happening to the little girl and had to do something.

Needless to say, I wasn't asked to be a counselor there again.

The child's mother was arrested along with the boyfriend. She knew. She did nothing.

At least in the extremely short term, and that sounds like it's right in Sen. Azinger's wheelhouse. A feel-good nostrum that doesn't do anything to address its purported goal, and then nobody has to do fuck all about a kid who is having problems at home.

My school was obliged to accept a sign that said "In God We Trust." It must be displayed in public.

So it accepted it.

It's hung in a hallway that includes the principle's and his aide's offices, 2 associate principle's offices, finance and ... nothing else. Can't be seen from the reception area.

Met all the requirements. But unless you're talking to finance or the three top principles, it's invisible.

Now, "conspicuous". What does that mean? Statute? Case law?

Yeah.
