China warns Kevin McCarthy NOT to visit Taiwan

China has issued a stern warning to new Speaker Kevin McCarthy not to visit Taiwan, following reports that the Pentagon is preparing for just such a visit this spring.

The warning comes after former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's own visit last year sparked a jump in tensions, prompting new military exercises by China and even fears of a military confrontation.

'We urge certain individuals in the US to earnestly abide by the one-China principle,' China's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said Monday, without mentioning McCarthy by name.

He said the unnamed individuals should 'stop doing anything that violates the basic norms in international relations,' Bloomberg News reported. Beijing's reference to the 'one-China' principle is diplomatic-speak for the U.S. policy of not formally recognizing Taiwan, in deference to diplomatic relations with the People's Republic of China.
