New College of Florida has been a shining beacon on Florida's Gulf Coast since 1960. Innovative, creative, environmentally aware. It began in a 1920s era home formerly owned by Charles Ringling of the circus family. Newer buildings on campus were designed by architect I. M. Pei.It's never had a huge student body, yet yielded 88 Fulbright Scholars. Now it will become the "Hillsdale of the South," thanks to our backward governor. (Italics are my opinion)
From Politico:
Some faculty said students felt hopeless about what could happen at the school, which is a unique college of under 700 undergraduates where students craft personalized education plans and dont receive letter grades.
Many students came here to feel safe and access the education that is their right as Floridians, Diego Villada, Assistant Professor of Theater and Performance Studies, told the board. And the impulse to make this a place where race, intersectionality and DEI are banned indicates to them that you want everyone to be the same to be like you.
Trustees, though, made it clear that the New College overhaul is fully underway, a message that came the same day DeSantis pledged to invest millions of dollars into recruiting faculty to the school.
The campus needs a deep culture change. You sat up here, you called us racists, sexists, bigots, outsiders, said trustee Mark Bauerlein, professor emeritus of English at Emory University who was appointed by DeSantis. We are now in a position of authority in the college. And the accusations are telling us that something is wrong here.

(6,721 posts)Students have to be recommended or have had to demonstrate exceptional maturity to even be there. This will backfire on desantis. Maybe not on faux news, but in national educational circles.

(8,922 posts)usually, everyone assumes I went to Texas A&M.
I'm shocked, shocked I say that NM State would reject anyone.

(6,721 posts)I made the Texas A&M mistake earlier. And after you corrected me I started seeing references to NMS all the time. It was early in the college football season last year. A season I'd just like to forget (being a Miami Hurricanes fan).

(8,922 posts)but they came on strong at the end of the season going 5-1 and finishing 6-6.
Which qualified them for the Quick-Lane Bowl game in Detroit, which they won, finishing the season 7-6.
The Men's Basketball team were the power of the WAC, making the NCAA tournament almost yearly.
This year they are in shambles. Hard to watch, but they play tonight 6pm PST, on Bally's AZ.

New College is a fabulous school where something like 80% go on the grad school. It is literally the best school on the east coast for the really really really smart artsy creative and nerdy types.
I truly hate deSatan and his Nazi wannabee goons sent to destroy it.

In 2012, Bauerlein announced his conversion to Catholicism. He is also the senior editor of First Things Journal.
The Institute on Religion and Public Life, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization and the publisher of First Things, was founded in 1989 by Richard John Neuhaus, a Lutheran pastor who later became a Catholic priest. The Institutes mission is to advance a religiously informed public philosophy for the ordering of society

(2,313 posts)The faculty will either be fired or ethically compromised. The students are having their dreams, and tuition already invested, stolen.
Its cruel and cynical and a sign, Im very afraid, of horrors on the horizon if good people dont start fighting back.
