We are all fine.
We learned a lot in December so we are more then prepared.
All the animals are safe and warm.
Just sitting by wood burning stove fixing stew.
Three friends came to visit so temporarily are staying over.
They are from Houston which is fine and has been spared the big freeze, just temps a little warmer.
But it is not safe to drive so I have company.
Temps back up in a few days.
The new normal.

(13,344 posts)No power since this morning and no indication that a crew is even working on it. Freezing temps again tonight, so I have a risk of frozen pipes. I already have lots of tree damage. Im so glad the governor fixed the power grid here and assured everyone a couple of days ago that everything would be fine.

(2,962 posts)You might want to check into a kerosene heater.
For next winter.
We have them on the farm here ..
They are safe if used correctly.
I was afraid the grid would go.
Mariana
(15,613 posts)you may be able to prevent frozen pipes.

(34,598 posts)nothing to do with the power grid.
Right.

(13,344 posts)Austin Energy hasnt even assigned a crew to my neighborhood, so it could be days before they get around to us. My utilities are all underground so the outage was not caused by falling wires. This is what happens when you dont spend the money to winterize the grid and you have an idiot governor who does nothing to force such precautions. After all, this kind of freeze here happens only once in a lifetime according to him, even though weve had three events in two years.
The state has an enormous budget surplus, none of which will be spent upgrading the power grid.
Texaswitchy
(2,962 posts)Just a shame this is happening again.
No need.
A kerosene heater is something to look into.
They are not as scary as they sound.
We have three and had no fires.
You just have to learn how to use them.
The newer models are really safe to use.
Just get them in the summer and learn how to use them.
The Texas grid will not get better.

(89,299 posts)It's another physically tangible reminder to us humans that there is DEFINITELY something bigger, and WAY more powerful, than we are.
For many, it's God Up-There. For all of us mortals, it's the weather down here.
That old barb wire fence sure did work..
Old Texas joke.

(13,107 posts)but her kids high school closed for 2 days? Not trusting the grid or just don't want to pay to heat? Who knows? She works from home so glad power working.
Said she feels freezing, they aren't use to cold weather. Said she is wearing blanket.
