Every year, on the second day of February, we ask a groundhog to predict how long winter will last. This annual event is known as Groundhog Day, and it is a uniquely American tradition.
I dont know about you, but I've never considered the absurdity of this holiday or questioned its origins. Because let's be honest: Can a groundhog predict the weather? And what kind of animal is a groundhog anyway? Also, why is this holiday so beloved in Pennsylvania? Read on for answers to these questions and more.

(70,722 posts)Groundhog Day is not a public holiday. Businesses have normal opening hours.

Groundhog Day is an observance but it is not a public holiday in the United States. However, areas around parks and some streets may be busy or congested in towns, such as Punxsutawney, where Groundhog Day events are popular.
Groundhog Day (Pennsylvania German: Grund'sau dåk, Grundsaudaag, Grundsow Dawg, Murmeltiertag; Nova Scotia: Daks Day) is a popular North American tradition observed in the United States, Canada, and Australia on February 2. It derives from the Pennsylvania Dutch superstition that if a groundhog emerges from its burrow on this day and sees its shadow due to clear weather, it will retreat to its den and winter will go on for six more weeks; if it does not see its shadow because of cloudiness, spring will arrive early.

(1,097 posts)Schools are closed EVERY year on February 2 for Groundhog Day in Punxsutawney and the day before and after depending on what day of the week it falls.
It's a holiday.

(70,722 posts)The kids get a five-day weekend this year.
There is no school on Wednesday, February 1st, Thursday, February 2nd and February 3rd. Enjoy the mid-winter break and Happy Groundhog Day!
Are the city offices open, or do they get the day off too?
Thanks.

You keep moving the goalposts.
Is it a public holiday?
Are school closed?
Is the government closed?
What are you going to ask next?
