(20,897 posts)Because they cover a vast array of topics, will surely be in violation of the 1st Amendment regarding Free Speech and Government retribution. The American populace has changed over the last 60 years to be more inclusive, thus the thirst for knowledge has increased.
What DeSantis is is doing in Florida regarding books regarding Diversity, encouraging critical thought, etc., is being watched by other Republican Governors in the states in order to suppress critical thinking. The 1st Amendment guarantees freedom of the press and speech from Government retribution and prosecution. Writing about one's life as a member of the LGBTQ community, writing about the horrors of slavery, etc., are NOT attacks on Government entities that require retribution that is taking place in Florida.
Banning authors such as James Baldwin, Toni Morrison, Nicole Hannah-Jones, Harper Lee, Mark Twain, etc., are acts by others to SUPPRESS thought and discussion about topics that are considered uncomfortable. This is NOT Cuba, N.Korea, Russia, China, Iran, etc. But people like DeSantis and others want to make the United States such. The Genie has been out of the bottle for over 240 years. It is not going to go back that easily.

(15,772 posts)Former librarian. How are these paid for? Are they former libraries that were public, but became privatized by a company, but still taxpayer supported (which is a different thing). This is fascinating.
Do you have to show a library card to enter?

(15,772 posts)Okay, thank you. We we're discussing folks paying for actual private libraries. There was a rape, death, and assault recently, on top of other problems, at our main library.
