(23,682 posts)So do contact your dr for their advice/script
They can also tell if its the new variant
You may want to quarantine, and mask if you go out

(11,663 posts)That was enough for my doctor to prescribe Paxlovid over the phone. No PCR test or office visit needed. A friend picked up the scrip and I started the course the next day. My symptoms (sore throat and 102F fever) were gone in less than 48 hours. I isolated for a week. Checked my temp and O2 levels frequently. I was vaxxed and double boosted at the time. I had the new vaccine booster 4 months after my infection.

I hope you're well soon

(13,071 posts)It needs to be taken early in the illness, if they will give it to you.
Good luck!

(2,196 posts)It probably won't be much more than a bad cold, just watch temp.keep hydrated and be ready to go for more help if it gets really bad. But probably won't. This was my experience as a fully vaxxed and boosted 81 YO with COPD

(2,555 posts)also. I quit at 59, six years ago and I was terrified of getting covid because of all my years smoking.
I feel you
I smoked heavily for 38 years and quit 30 years ago now... I was frightened as possible and spent all of my time at home and wore good masks whenever I had to go any place.....That was for the original covid, the omicrion version is not anywhere near as bad as the delta variety... had head aches, cough and some fever, tested positive for 2 weeks come out OK with no discernible after effects. Like they are saying hey the plax if you can and get it soon...
Tickle
(2,555 posts)throat. I don't have a thermometer to take my temp and I don't feel like I have one.
I was negative for COVD yesterday so I guess today is day 1
Actually test positive today??
WarGamer
(12,485 posts)For me personally... I have had it twice, the first time I didn't test but I was pretty sure I had it. Second time I tested positive.
For me... and your mileage may vary, it was no worse than the common cold and I tested negative on Day 6.
I was in bed for one day. Back behind the computer and watching TV on day 2. Ready to get back to normal life on Day 3 but waited until I had the negative retest.

(2,555 posts)and I will contact my DR. office tomorrow like it was suggested

(7,156 posts)Got it in early December. Sick for about a week at "bad cold level." There was one day when I was reeeaaally tired/dizzy and could hardly get out of bed. Had a bit of a lingering cough for a couple weeks. so overall, it wasn't too bad. This was my second go-round; I was an early adopter and am 99% certain I had it in early January of 2020. Back then it took me a few months to get back to 100%, but I wasn't vaxxed at that point, of course.
It's quite unlikely you'll have a very bad case. Millions and millions of people have gone through it; some repeatedly.

(1,792 posts)I needed a cough suppressant for the punishing, hacking, unproductive coughing. The cough was so bad I thought I'd eventually break a rib. (That actually happened to a friend).

(1,792 posts)...of Covid was the cough. It was a hacking, punishing cough that I haven't experienced since a bout with bronchitis years ago. It gave me splitting headaches. So I was glad to get an Rx for cough suppressant, which worked really well. I never experienced loss of taste or smell. It was like a really bad cold that dragged on for a couple of weeks. It probably would have been even longer without Paxlovid.

(2,202 posts)fatigue and body aches were the worst of it for me. Some flu symptoms.
Watch out for difficulty breathing or high fever.
Stay hydrated.
Take care and get well soon.

(1,737 posts)I managed to avoid it until 01Nov22, when I tested positive the day after moving from Wisconsin to Florida. I called my WI doctor and was told to self-quarantine, stay hydrated, and watch my symptoms.
The first few days werent fun, and the cough lingered for about two weeks, but I never felt bad enough to seek outside care. I decided against Paxlovid because of potential side effects. It took 7-10 days to test negative. The worst part was transmitting it to the person I moved in with. Thank goodness his symptoms were even milder than mine. He was fully vaxxed and boosted too.
Hope all goes well with your adventure.

(13,572 posts)necessarily keep you from getting it. You will be less likely to end up in hospital and hopefully make symptoms milder. It kind of like the flu shot. Makes you less likely to end up in hospital and mild symptoms -hopefully .

(5,272 posts)Like you, I started with sore throat and headache. Then progressed to sniffles, congestion, fever and cough and coughing up phlegm. Lots of mucus. So decongestant was helpful and after getting fever I took Aleve (but you could use Advil or Tylenol or other fever reducer). I also used cough syrup (with suppressant and expectorant ) and went through a bag of cough drops until better.
My doctor prescribed Paxlovid on Day 2 of testing positive and the symptoms eased for a couple of days but I then had rebound with fever and bad cough and congestion for several more days.
Everyone's different. Some people never progress to anything but mildest of symptoms. I had no loss of smell or taste and no stomach problems but some people get nausea or diarrhea. Very important to stay hydrated.

(13,874 posts)My wife and I both had what seemed like a typical bad head cold. The only difference was instead of a 5 day run it lasted about twice that long, and the fatigue took about another week to finally resolve itself.

(2,555 posts)I'm sorry you and your wife went through this but you had each other. I'm taking my rescue fur babies to bed to snuggle as it it below zero and the wind is howling. I'll go to the walkin tomorrow and ask for Paxlovid
Paxlovid(Nirmatrelvir/ritonavir)

(9,275 posts)Same symptoms - sore throat, bad headache, chills. Started feeling better almost immediately after the first dose of Paxlovid. Warning, it gives you a horrible taste in your mouth. Worth it, and it goes away when youre done the meds.

(11,663 posts)But I had no change in taste nor other side effects.

(94,786 posts)Almost all cases where people are vaxxed are a couple of days of the equivalent of the flu. Maybe some lost of taste and smell. Most symptoms disappear in 5-7 days.
BlackSkimmer
(51,308 posts)Horribly sick, but no cough, no sore throat.
Very high fever, body aches, fatigue, chills, sweats, misery. But that was the first version.
Been fine since, except for getting sick with the subsequent vaxxes.
Drink lots of water. Sleep.

(1,959 posts)and taste. very weird feeling to not know the taste of what you're eating. I was a little tired for a day or two, but not much else.
Hopefully your one of the many who gets nothing or very little!

(32,805 posts)If you are vaxxed and boosted, it's nothing to worry about. But the only symptom I had was loss of taste and smell. It lasted about 4 days, by the 5th day it slowly started to come back. I had no sore throat but I was hoarse - not swollen or painful though.
I stayed home for almost 2 weeks. Took some aspirin and vitamin C. Drank a lot of tea, coffee and hot chocolate. Spent some extra time in bed, tried to eat a normal diet. That's it. The vaccine makes it a piece of cake.
If you should have any trouble breathing, don't waste time - get to the hospital immediately.
greatauntoftriplets
(175,754 posts)It was like a mild flu. No Paxlovid at the time, so I was told to take some vitamins and a Zantac. I had a cough and a slightly sore throat, but have had much worse.
It took about 10 days to get a negative test. Had my first vaccine shortly afterward and am now fully vaxxed and boosted.
Feel better!

(42,401 posts)more fluids. Chicken soup or broth. Lozenges for sore /cough. Ibuprofen for fever and throat pain.
Sleep, nap, sleep. You're vaxxed and boosted, you should be OK. Be prepared for some lingering fatigue after a week.
Otherwise, call your doctor. Take care.

(1,880 posts)Hydration is very important. Lots of water. We also drank hot water with honey, lemon and cinnamon for the sore throat. Ask doc about the best pain medicine protocol. My only symptom was a whale of a headache. Pain raises blood pressure so keep that in mind. Stay safe. Your body is tough. Your vaccines are helping! Take good care and be easy with yourself. 💗🙏

(2,555 posts)your advice and you guys were right. I just returned from the walk-in and I feel like a drug store.
I got the paxlovid inhaler and promethazine. Apparently most drug stores are out of codeine cough medicine
Anyway I'm headed to a hot bath in my old fashion tub.
Thanks to all for being there.
