Inherit the Wind with Spencer Tracy. Very good movie.

(11,439 posts)I'm surprised I've never seen it before.
TCM shows a lot of interesting (although not always very good) movies: they show a lot of how ordinary Americans lived and acted long ago. If it comes around again, I recommend "Sullivan's Travels", about a wealthy movie director wandering around Depression-era America and finding out first hand about poverty and injustice. And the "Golddiggers" movies of the 30s, widely considered fluffy escapism, have surprisingly dark sides.

Another old movie that fits these times is Detective Story with Kirk Douglas. That movie was ahead of its time. It's about abortion. Great acting and a great screen play.

I was young seeing it for the first time on TV. and absolutely captured by it. "Inherit the Wind" stayed with me a very long time.

(680 posts)We read that play in HS English class, 10th grade maybe. Then we watched the movie in class. This was in about 1972, in a Dekalb county (Atlanta suburbs) public school.
I shudder to think about the fecal tempest that would happen today.
