my great grandfather james bates was one of the first police chiefs in harvey at the turn of the 20th century. used to visit grandmother and great aunt on annual family vacation in the sixties. long island to harvey, long drive for a ten year old. house my grandfather built is across the street from the library on turlington avenue. he got two pages in the 1962 harvey centennial history book.

small world stuff of little consequence. harvey used to be more vibrant and prosperous 60 years ago. best years well in the past.

1. I Grew Up in Evanston and My Parents Had Several Friends in Harvey

The family was friends with the guys from Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes who hailed from Harvey I believe. Some members of the group were usually present for cook outs and other gatherings. I'm 70 so this was many years ago. I always enjoyed visiting with my family.
