Republicans Propose Forcing Schools to Provide Chocolate Milk to Children

https://www.newsweek.com/republicans-propose-forcing-schools-chocolate-milk-elise-stefanik-eric-adams-new-york-1779171

On February 3, Elise Stefanik, the GOP congresswoman for the empire state's northerly, rural 21st district, introduced the Protecting School Milk Choices Act of 2023, which would force schools that participate in the National School Lunch Program to offer at least one flavored milk option. The amendment to the National School Lunch Act would also provisions for schools to offer lactose-free milk.

When the rumors first surfaced, Stefanik introduced the bill in the previous legislative session, co-sponsored by three other Republican representatives. With the GOP back in control of the House, the member of the House Committee on Education and the Workforce has now brought it back and already has seven Republican co-sponsors.

"Any effort of Mayor Adams to ban chocolate milk and replace it with vegan juice is an absolute non-starter and will be opposed by parents, families, kids, and New Yorkers," Stefanik stated on Friday. "Instead of taking away milk choices from students, my bill will give them better access to essential dairy nutrients critical for their development."

In response, Adams wrote on April 14, 2022: "My administration is committed to empowering our students and their parents with the information and resources needed to make healthy choices for themselves and for our city. To that end, we are preparing for stakeholder engagement with our school communities to provide feedback on all aspects of our school food program.

I submit the question is the sugary chocolate milk better or worse than nothing.

That this is national politics, though, seems more than a bit absurd.

Which is something they should be doing with all of the food. I've read/watched stories about schools here in the US revamping their school menus to use more fresh and fewer processed foods. It's too bad we can't replicate the food examples across the country.

7. I got through high school on chocolate milk. 3 for 25 cents

Never had lunch made for me and I for some reason never made sandwiches to bring. We weren't poor, there was food in the house, but I just never wanted to bring lunch with me. I would find 25 cents somewhere and you could get 3 chocolate milks for that in our cafeteria. Had a friend who would sometimes split his cheese sandwich with me. Until I was working senior year and had money for the salad bar which they would charge a set fee for and I'd open the plastic container and fill both sides with salad, it'd be the biggest meal of the day I think for $2.50.

The fact we feed children garbage in schools is an absolute tragedy at this point. It's the 1 chance we have to help kids develop healthy eating habits. Feeding them sugar is a huge problem.

And "vegan juice"? What the hell are they even talking about? Isn't that just called juice?

We better order up truckloads of candy bars and sugary snacks. Sweet iced coffee with lots of cream and sugar in place of milk. Jelly beans in place of veggies (no black ones though).

Oh, and private areas where kids can recreate with each other; especially in high school.

Yeah, that will work.

would rarely drink white milk. It's better than kids buying or bringing in cans of pop or other sweet drinks with ZERO nutritional value. It's funny how politics works in matters like this: Sometimes Dems love the nanny state a little too much in trying to enforce safety and healthy choices (but it's well-meaning), and GOPers love the nanny state when they can dictate all the various food choices in EBT and demand drug testing for welfare benefits, unemployment, etc. (NOT well-meaning, meant as punitive and to encourage people not to use benefits at all).

I doubt it's about chocolate milk so much as it's about silencing any talk about animal rights.
