I did not know that Rhode Island once had a poll tax!
A news story on PBS about Frederick Douglass revealed that he paid his $1 poll tax in order to vote.
Growing up in segregated (and former Confederate state) Texas, we had a poll tax and I remember my father discussing it. He was not bothered by it and, tho he didn't say so, knew it was designed to keep black people from voting.
So I was disappointed that it occurred in the North.
