Hi DU, as some of you know I am in hospital.

I went back in the hospital after being hospitalized in July with heart complications of Covid. I was in AFIB, Covid pneumonia…the whole Shebang. I turns out I don’t just have AFIB. They did get me out of it for on Wednesday after cardiac shock didn’t work. Nope the aortic valve is bad and will have to be replaced. I think they are keeping me until the surgery. The valve is crushing and weakening the heart which is why I am out of breath and in cardiac failure. It is why I had AFIB.

The procedure could be open heart or it could be a more modern version …forgot the name. But it will be one of them. The procedure is not without risk although I am optimistic. I have a genetically obtained Tricuspid aortic heart valve. They wear out faster. I am relatively young. This is mostly seen in older folks

Just in case things go south and I don’t think they will, I want to tell all of you how much you mean to me. And how much this site means to me. Thank you all for being there with me thru the good and the. And thank you EarlG for this wonderful site. It is a wonderful place populated with fabulous people. There is nothing like it anywhere else. With love and gratitude…

Terry

.

I got out of the hospital last Thursday. Meds would not correct it until I had a ⚡️cardioversion ⚡️.

Now my heart is beating like I was in my 20s.

After a series of tests, they could nothing wrong with my heart and are at a loss for why it happened.
It turns out that some of the ingredients in the day & night suppressants can trip AFIB. So a word of
warning, only take stuff that is the HB or heart safe stuff. I was taking a famous brand starting with M
every four hours. On Saturday & Sunday nights I switched to the might version. Monday at 4AM I awoke
from my sleep, skipping a few beats and in AFIB.

I wish you well and hopefully they can get a handle on it. It sounds like they know what is needed.

I'm sending positive vibes to you as I now know how scary this is.

i was fortunate they went up thru my groin.
I guess i finally understood the way to my heart was thru my groin........
I got my afib courtesy of the flu.....
I was told that while afib is serious...it is a heart problem, there are worse.

Hang in there. You are not at some rural vet clinic..You are at a big time cleveland hospital.
Put your faith in your doctors. They have seen it all before.
They know what they are doing.
Be happy you are not a republican because they would have to try to find your heart first.
You will come out of this ok
we need you to do doors in 2024

My daughter was born with a genetic disorder as well. She has had 3 open heart surgeries all for coarctation of aortic valve, aortic repair and this last one was a cadaver valve replacement. She's 35.. Doing well. I'm thinking of you Demsrule86, sending healing energy.

That's a wonderful attribute. My husband had his aortic valve replaced with a pig valve about 9 years ago. In his case, he had a genetically defective bicuspid valve which had become nearly blocked from calcium build up. I am sure you will do very well, after about seven weeks of the major part of the healing.

With his valve blockage reducing his blood flow to just 20 percent of normal, his circulatory system wasn't removing waste materials. An unexpected symptom (at least to me) was terrible migraines lasting as long as four days. Just want to raise awareness on that one.

We look forward to you getting that valve fixed, you regaining your health, and enjoying many future discussions with you.

While to the best of my knowledge COVID is not a factor, I too have been experiencing AFib. They have already tried shock (cardioversion) with success that lasted 1 week. In March I will be undergoing a procedure called catheter ablation where they freeze connection to the heart. It is supposed to stop signals from the pulmonary vein that cause unwanted heartbeats.

I don't know how similar this is to your situation, but I am as frightened as I suspect you are. Let's hope for the best for both of us.

Here's hoping your procedure goes splendidly! My mother had both a cardio-version and a cardiac ablation (via catheter through the groin) and both went perfectly. The advancements for these kinds of procedures are just amazing.

We'll all be here waiting to hear a full report once you're on the mend. Take care, my friend.

Before they took me to the OR, I had to sign a paper saying I was aware of about 15 things that could go wrong resulting in my not coming back alive. I said OK, but I’m not dying here today.

Just before I was done down there, the surgeon said his first words in English to me: “just in time.” I told him (in German), better that than half a minute too late.

Just give us your best Terminator impression, say, “I’ll be back.” Then do just that. We’ll be here waiting.

In 2010, I had both the mitral and aortic valve replaced with one tissue and one metallic valve. This after literally months of not knowing what was wrong, and coming much closer to catastrophe than I'd ever want to be again. The root cause was a Staph A infection attempting to turn my heart into mush.

Both my surgeon and cardiologist said that mine was the most damaged heart they'd ever seen anyone survive. A personal best for them, huzzah.

Recovery was long, but eventually excellent. I went from not being able to walk the 100 feet to the street corner and back, to doing 2 miles in 40 minutes with my dog each morning. That may not sound impressive, but for a guy in his mid-60s in the shape I had been in, I'll take that result all day long. There is no reason I know of that would prevent you from achieving a similar result.

You've got this!!!

Had open heart surgery, and it was very successful, but if I had it to do over, I'd go for the less invasive method. Everybody is different, and every body is different, but that's my personal take, fwi.

Whichever procedure you have, I wish you a safe and successful surgery and the speediest recovery possible!

even though it was a long recovery it was so worth it. He feels better than he has since he was in the 40's. He 76 now. They have done so many of these now it's almost routine. The TAVR is supposed to be very easy recovery but the all new valve is supposed to last (hopefully for a lifetime). I sure wish you luck. I know how scary it can be but I know that they really do know what they are doing with these now and you will be fine. Just sore!! Take care and get back to us when you can.

My wife and a friend have both had surgically replaced aortic valves and recovered well. The procedure you can't remember is Transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). Be good if you're a candidate. It's much less traumatic on the body than open heart surgery.

156. The new procedure is TAVR - TransArterial Valve Replacement. If you can get it - do it.
Wed Feb 15, 2023, 12:44 PM
Feb 2023

I got one in 2017. It is not invasive and since they don't crack your chest open, usually you can be out of the hospital the next day.

I was actually enrolled in the study to get TAVR approved for low risk patients. Got all the way up to signing all the paperwork and getting the final CT scan to make sure my arteries were clear enough for the procedure. Unfortunately for the doctor managing the study at the local hospital, the CT scan found a mass on my left kidney.

The cardio-thoracic surgeon was hoping it could be sectioned and I could stay in the study, the the urologist he sent me to determined that with the location of the mass, my kidney had to be removed quickly, but he wanted my heart to be fixed first. At that point I was no longer low risk so I got the TAVR and a month later, they removed my left kidney. The TAVR procedure was the easiest operation I have ever been through.

Oh you are not under full anesthesia for the procedure - you have to be somewhat aware during it. I had been so worried that I only got three hours sleep the night before and fell asleep during - the anesthesiologist was kind of freaked having to wake me up.

I wasn't aware, but my husband said there were nine surgeons in the operating room. Since this was a new procedure, they were training up all their cardio-thoracic surgeons to do it. Plus, as the ads on TV show, hospitals anticipated doing a LOT of these in the future.

What to watch out for - vasovagal syncope and low blood pressure. I had one syncope the day after the TAVR. That delayed my departure from the hospital for a day. Sometimes if the syncopes are more often or severe, they might put in a pacemaker.

Good luck, Terry!
