Respect for the work they do, when they do it right. We finally see it as a complicated issue that it is, rather than one sided in favor of police.

(38,313 posts)The cops won't show unless someone is dead, bleeding, or on fire.
Our cops certainly don't hang out in front of WalMart waiting to scold teenage girls shoplifting lipstick.
They won't come out for kids throwing rocks through my kitchen window, and they don't want to know about your fender-bender.
The perverse thing is I don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing.
I've seen our cops shoot bad people I myself wouldn't have shot.
I always give long hard thought before I call them and when I do I explain everything about the situation in the most minute detail, hoping it will be recorded.
If it's just some stupid kids tagging my back wall, my dogs barking, I walk back there with the persona I learned as a high school teacher, with somewhat saltier language. Usually they run away, leaving the paint-over to me. If they stay, I hear stories akin to those I've told about the knife scar on my arm.
Sadly the story about the knife scar on my arm is pretty damned pathetic. Once upon a time I too was young and foolish.
