(81,267 posts)Human, vulnerable, but fiery with conviction about doing things to help people, like it's his life's mission or something. I don't know if it's growing up Catholic or not. But he was inspired, and MOST compelling, and sincere as all-get-out. VERY real. Honest and sympathetic. Friendly, sincere, and totally non-threatening. His demeanor is such that you automatically are comfortable and non-threatened, but still intellectually and morally challenged and intrigued. He has a way of communicating that really reaches into you. And he means it. And you listened tonight because you were interested, and because you wanted to.
I'm just continually impressed with this guy. I thought he'd be good, but shit - he's really got something. All those years in the Senate, many of them as Chairman of significant committees. And he has a heart.
This is a GOOD guy. Gravely underestimated. REALLY glad he's the President. We needed this.
He really rose to the occasion, which is great - but what's even better is how so many people seem to recognize it now. What great reviews he's getting, and serious acknowledgement and new respect. That speech connected and impressed, and maybe also motivated and encouraged. Reassuring, and with concrete reasons for it. I'm more than getting my money's worth. And I think his presidency took a big turn today. Loaded up on power, conviction, sincerity, ideas, and action. They'll be talking about 2024, and him, more and more, and in a positive way. Dramatically moreso than before that speech.

(189 posts)He will diss the whole speech and call it confrontational, and he will wonder why this (extraordinary) President is doing so badly and is polling so badly and is not telling the people anything and is . . . whatever else he can come up with to diminish this President.... The media will find fault and will bring in Qpublican consultants to verify whatever egregious statements they imagine this President made.. Truly hope I'm wrong but I have ZERO faith in MSM.

(81,267 posts)I used to have to wade through this shit as a news reporter. Then, once retired, as a constituent, and activist.
It's been my observation that the mainstream media will do ANYTHING to avoid being accused of liberal bias. The easiest way to try to counteract that is by being SUPER-accommodating and welcoming to the opposition ("SEE? We're FAIR! BOTH SIDES!!! BOTH SIIIIIIIDES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" . Some of 'em, while calling themselves liberal or progressive, will bend over backwards, upside-down, double-twisted inside-out, and into the most complicated pretzels imaginable, to avoid being seen as favoring the liberal view. Even when they themselves may actually be of liberal leanings. But they want to be seen as even-handed. So unfortunately, a lot more time, effort, and sucking-up will be given over to the enemy camp because you've JUST GOTTA SHOW YOU'RE NOT FAVORING ONE SIDE. Even when that one side is the side that campaigned for you, knocked on doors for you, donated to you, attended rallies for you, and ultimately brought you to the table. At that point, those "loyalties" and a quarter will get you a few minutes in a parking meter.
Frankly, as a constituent and activists, I don't give one flying fuck about "BOTH SIDES!!! BOTH SIDES!!!!" I want MY side heard, and prioritized. As a strategist I can understand the games that have to be played and the excruciatingly careful weaving of interests and tiptoeing around interested parties that don't hesitate to use whatever clout and conniving skills they have to force you to bend to their terms.

(81,267 posts)Glad you're here, and weighing in.
Many of us have been here for double-digit years. It's always VERY good to hear from folks with low post counts either because they're new OR because they've just been sitting quietly and taking it all in while the rest of us merrily go blabbing all the way!

(25,980 posts)Even the media got knocked back on their heels by the 'wow' factor. I've seen plenty of SOTUs going back to Johnson and Nixon (yech) and this just put all of them in the shade.

I haven't seen a receptive mouth that big since the last egg hatching in the neighborhood bird nest! Surely there's a bird flying around with a nice juicy worm to drop in there... Better feed the baby...
OR, of course, it certainly could just be the first runner-up in the hog calling competition...

He matched Biden's "masterful" speech with a masterful opening commentary of his own.

(9,895 posts)That performance last night, when taken as a whole, was a master class in how to put the opposition on the spot. He baited them and toyed with them and got exactly the optics and responses he wanted.
McCarthy is neutered on debt ceiling and SS/Medicare.
Taylor-Greene is painted as a bad caricature of a Disney villainess.
The GOP caucus was shown through the lens of the craziest of the crazies and then Huckabee-Sanders went off the reservation cray-cray as a dessert tray offering of more lunacy than 15 minutes could hold.
The thing about SOTU addresses is no the quips or one-liners or invited guests that no one remembers weeks or even days later...the address is critical to giving the American public a look behind the curtains at the man in the chair, the head guy in charge and how well he can emote or evince emotion in the public that things are going to be OK.
Prior to last night, I was in the crowd of people who felt like the country's condition was critical and the Oval Office might not have a plan to hold it together. After the speech, the mannerism, the delivery, the master class in how to make stupid people own themselves and the focus on issues that matter over issues that muddle....I woke up today and I felt better than I have since President Obama won in 2008. I felt like we have a chance to pull this thing back from the edge of the abyss and get real things done before calamity strikes.
If my emotional state can be flipped so drastically by a Presidential address, either it was a masterful stroke of genius or I am in a fragile enough state to need medications....since I am managing to hold down my job and family responsibilities without medication or assistance still, I am going with the former on this.
Well done, Mr. President. Well done indeed.
