Rick Scott doubles down on sunsetting all federal programs after Biden's jab

You see folks, Joe Biden was CORRECT! Rick Scott of Florida, proved him right once again! Joe is NOT confused, Ricky! He knows exactly what you said and meant.

Source: The Hill

Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) on Wednesday defended his proposal to sunset all federal legislation after five years and slammed President Biden as “confused” in response to Biden’s claim at the State of the Union address that some Republicans want to sunset Social Security and Medicare.

“In my plan, I suggested the following: All federal legislation sunsets in five years. If a law is worth keeping, Congress can pass it again,” Scott said in a statement following Biden’s address to a joint session of Congress.

Scott last year rankled Republicans when he rolled out a 12-point policy agenda that included the sunset proposal, which Democrats promptly began using as ammunition in the midterms.

They would never e-e-e-e-e-ver do away with Social Security and Medicare. Well, unless some overrich person somewhere needed another tax break he'll never be able to spend in a thousand lifetimes. Then, yeah, sunset comes for Social Security and Medicare. Tough toenails for you if you were one of the millions of Americans depending on those programs, but Richie Rich can't possibly go on paying an onerous marginal tax rate of almost 5%!

What if over 5 years we have a split congress and no laws get renewed? Does that mean we would be a country with no laws?

Rick Scott is crazy. I used to worry about him being elected president. But he's starting to explain just how crazy he is.

As the man said, “Some people just want to watch the world burn”.

How many people chafe at laws that keep them from doing what they truly want to do?
Rape their wife.

Beat/starve their children.

Shoot their neighbor for playing loud music/being queer/cutting in front of them.

Make homemade bombs…

Dump chemical waste in a convenient river.

And he went on to be Governor of Florida and a senator. What is wrong with voters? This was never a secret.

all they care about is if a candidate is NOT a Democrat. Republicans have effectively demonized Democrats for years and some voters are thoroughly conditioned to distrust anyone with a "D" behind their name.

Let’s pick out a fairly benign law…oh, let’s say 36 USC 304.

The entire text of this law is:

“The composition by John Philip Souza entitled ‘The Stars and Stripes Forever’ is the national march.”

Does Rick Scott REALLY want to go in every five years and redesignate The Stars and Stripes Forever as the national march?

Does he want to renegotiate the Genocide law, which is 18 USC 1091? Actually…this one he might because “transferring by force children of the group to another group” qualifies, and there’s a nonzero chance that’s what Trump’s kids-in-cages policy was intended to do.

Good laws, of which there are vast numbers, don’t need to be renegotiated.

Spend a bunch of money to get compliant with current law. Then five years from now, the Christofascists control everything and gut the laws. Should a business keep full compliant when things flip again? Should they ignore and assume things will flip back? How do you plan for this? Labor laws, environmental laws, safety laws, banking laws, business reporting laws, etc can flip all over the place or be repealed completely, then reimposed when sanity returns.

They love to play with language and only work to trigger emotional responses.

Scott knows very well that laws and programs that would be insanely popular, have been thwarted time and again by playing on racism, sexism, and other hatreds and fears.

When Social Security and Medicare were made part of the Federal Budget, their champions were smart enough to understand that the programs reflected the Compassionate, Progressive values of our society, and made them NON-DISCRETIONARY spending, so that they could NEVER be ended simply by voting to end them. FDR and LBJ and their compatriots in the Congress, knew full well, at their times in office, that Conservatives ALWAYS wanted to kill of any government programs that distributed funds to the most vulnerable in our society.

Conservatives, AT THEIR CORE, think that money should only be spent on WORTHY things. The rich are WORTHY and the rest of us are a BURDEN. We are good to exploit for labor and cannon fodder, but THEY shouldn't have to give up ANY of their wealth to make sure we have safe water, clean air, medical care, and any standard of living once we get old or become infirm.

People need to understand that this is not just a difference in policy. This is a fundamentally different way of looking at the world and the value of human life.

Rick Scott really wants to sunset Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and all other social programs. Scott doubled down on his plans today after being called out last night by President Biden in the SOTU.

https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/maddowblog/rick-scott-isnt-helping-case-social-security-medicare-rcna69702

And yet, Scott keeps digging deeper. The Washington Post reported this morning:

Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.) doubled down Wednesday on a plan that would require all legislation — including that relating to popular programs, such as Social Security and Medicare — to be passed every five years to stay on the books. Scott’s comments, made in a tweet, followed a reference by President Biden on Tuesday night to Scott’s plan, which Democrats used as fodder to attack Republicans in advance of the midterm elections last year.

In his State of the Union address, President Joe Biden did not call out Scott by name, but there was no real doubt who he was talking about when he referenced “some” Republicans who would allow Medicare and Social Security to sunset.

In response to GOP heckling, the Democrat added, “I’m politely not naming them, but it’s being proposed by some of you.”

It was against this backdrop that Scott turned to Twitter this morning, standing by his plan to sunset “all federal legislation” after five years. “If a law is worth keeping,” the Floridian wrote, “Congress can pass it again.”.....

For the far-right Floridian to double down on this point again today only helps bolster the White House’s point. Scott seemed to think he was correcting Biden with his Twitter thread, when in fact he inadvertently helped prove the president right.
