AOC says she's not convinced Kevin McCarthy will actually keeps his hands off cuts to Medicare and S

Social Security: 'The math does not add up'

AOC is worried that GOP promises to leave Medicare and Social Security alone might not hold up.

As debt limit negotiations have been heating up, Republican lawmakers have expressed their intent to use raising the debt limit — and keeping the US on top of paying its bills — as leverage to achieve their own priorities, particularly spending cuts.

And while some Republicans previously expressed a desire to cut Medicare and Social Security, Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy made clear last month that cuts to those programs are "off the table." Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, however, isn't convinced.

"He cannot both say, we're going to balance the budget, we're not going to touch any of the Trump tax cuts, and we're also not going to cut any critical services," she continued. "The math does not work in Kevin McCarthy's favor."

...is not in his favor if he does. He and some of the Repugs are not COMPLETELY stupid and can do the political math that constituents at home won't be voting for them if they go cutting grandma's SS etc. They could play a game that cuts won't take effect until 2025 or even later and then project a balanced budget by like 2030 or later but doubt they could even get away with that and keep getting enough votes in many palces in 2024. I do think the budget and deficits are an issue that should be addressed and I think the smart road for the Dems is to agree on that point and then have some good budget cutting ideas AND some solid tax reform ideas that move in that direction. A major Dem play where the Rs do CRAZY and we act sanely and responsibly is a winner in 2024 and beyond. We don't win by just saying NO to anything Repug. We win by taking action and moving the country in a positive direction the majority of voters can see and appreciate.
