seymourhersh.substack.com/p/how-america-took-out-the-nord-stream?r=5mz1
Seymour hasn't had a great record in recent years. I don't post this in support of what he writes. Like so many Americans I have no idea where the truth situates itself on this topic
But naming the US Navy as the saboteur is really provocative, I am sure Putin and his gang will use this posting to claim this is a direct attack on Russian property by the United States.
"...
Two of the pipelines, which were known collectively as Nord Stream 1, had been providing Germany and much of Western Europe with cheap Russian natural gas for more than a decade. A second pair of pipelines, called Nord Stream 2, had been built but were not yet operational. Now, with Russian troops massing on the Ukrainian border and the bloodiest war in Europe since 1945 looming, President Joseph Biden saw the pipelines as a vehicle for Vladimir Putin to weaponize natural gas for his political and territorial ambitions.
Asked for comment, Adrienne Watson, a White House spokesperson, said in an email, This is false and complete fiction. Tammy Thorp, a spokesperson for the Central Intelligence Agency, similarly wrote: This claim is completely and utterly false.... "

(36,108 posts)Sy Hersh is a journalistic legend. His work tends to get supported when he exposes malfeasance under a GOP administration, and attacked when it's the other party. That's just the truth of it

(1,536 posts)I think his writing on My Lai (Vietnam was very very important.
His recent stuff, particularly on the Iranian nuclear threat and the threat of Iran starting another war hasn't been of that quality.

(36,745 posts)Pro-Putler propoganda on the part of Hersh if he is making that accusation.

(33,345 posts)So does Putin.
Who else? Ukraine has the motive, but not the capacity.
Western Europe has the capacity but not the motive.
I'm going to go with SPECTRE or HYDRA, though.

(7,308 posts)I mean, it could have potentially been a two-edged sword. OTOH, we certainly want Europe to stop using Russian energy. OTOH, doing that, at that time, could have potentially caused Europe to suffer a very tough winter and weakened their resolve. The German's were already waffling because of their "need" for Russian energy.
If it was the US, it was a pretty big gamble.

(33,345 posts)I seriously doubt the Biden Admin would green light destruction of Energy Infrastructure. It would piss our allies off royally, but it's not out of the realm of possibility.
Russia would be shooting themselves in the foot to destroy these pipelines, but maybe blaming someone else is the goal. Hersh might want to contemplate whether there are wheels within wheels.

(123 posts)He was great in his earlier career, but lately he has gone off the rails. He disputed that Osama Bin Laden had anything to do with 9/11.
"Hersh commented that the 2011 raid that resulted in the death of Osama bin Laden was "one big lie, not one word of it is true".
Now this.
