Boy, was I wrong.

Recently I posted that President Biden should just present the SOTU in writing and not bother to do it in person. I said this for several reasons. One, the safety issue as has been discussed in recent days. Two, why give them the satisfaction of heckling and acting like idiots for their base.

Then, enter Dark Brandon, who, with a smile on his face managed to give them a good ass-kickin'.

I'll just say he's an easy guy to under-estimate, but he out-does himself over and over again. All I can say I hope I'm half that sharp if I live ten more years and make it to 80.

You’d feel the same way about family, your kids, friends you cared about, even other folks like favorite teachers or neighbors who are important to you.

I worried because I’m a worrier anyway. And yes he’s older and as I age that’s on my radar screen a lot more. And I feel WAY more protective of him against all the monsters and cheats and fiends and assholes and wannabe saboteurs trying to make his life miserable. But it’s MOST satisfying (not to mention a big relief) when you realize you worried for no reason. It’s really true. He’s GOT this.

In the presidential elections of 2008 and 2012 I had the opportunity to see Joe live. In fact, we were even picked out of a crowd and given seats behind Joe for one of those speeches. He was incredibly effective - a man who overcame a speech impediment to become one of the most effective communicators of this century. There is something of a crucible in forging the mettle of a man in overcoming that challenge.

Don't fuck with Joe.
And don't underestimate him either.

I knew he’d run for president. I knew he would win. I knew he’d be great.

I had first row VIP but I swear he made eye contact with every person in the room.

It was so hot people in line were passing out to see him. He had all the children go up on stage so they wouldn’t be squashed by the throngs. It was a college campus and I knew he’d get a lot of young people voting for him.

to admit to a mistake, so my hat is off to you.

I too was worried, am worried, and will probably always worry with so many hugely armed and tremendously addled and disturbed people out there.

I worry as well that, despite this amazing speech, most Americans, who get their news in parcels of two minutes or less, won't appreciate the full weight of the President's achievement. Which is too bad for them, for us, and for the country.

Best wishes.

Someone who interrupts you all the time and tries to Bigfoot you and take over - including taking over YOUR time and YOUR turn to answer.

You interrupt? Well then if that’s the game here, I can play that one, too.

Besides, Joe’s always had jousting to do with people. He knows how. That other guy is just so used to dominating since he surrounds himself with people who are easily cowed or intimidated, or know and accept their (inferior) positioning so they don’t put up much of a fight. Biden’s not that guy, and he acknowledges no such thing about a foe like the donald. And the last thing he’ll do is concede or defer to that bastard in any way.

on how to deal with hecklers.

I know campaigns bring in a lot of outside help/consultants when they're doing debate prep. If doing SOTU prep in the current environment, the appropriate consultants would be people skilled at dealing with hecklers.

Maybe "Sleepy joe's" years and years of political experience just taught him the right way to turn the heckling back on them, or maybe someone had the forethought to prepare for Repuke misbehavior.
