The tenure of the U.S. Postal Services newest board members got off to a tense start on Friday as President Bidens appointees voiced their displeasure with the agency's direction and USPS' leader stated he will still move forward with reforms. We do not a
The disagreements surrounded Postmaster General Louis DeJoys plan to slow down deliveries for some mail and packages, a key element of the embattled leaders 10-year blueprint to improve USPS service and financial footing. It was the first meeting with a full slate of governors on the postal board in more than a decade, after Biden nominated and the Senate confirmed individuals for the final three slots in recent months.
Ronald Stroman, the former deputy postmaster general and one of Bidens nominees, took the most aggressive approach in criticizing DeJoys plan, saying the delivery slowdowns would hinder the agencys ability to provide prompt and reliable service without federal funding. He said the plan is strategically-ill conceived, creates dangerous risks that are not justified by the relatively low financial return, and doesnt meet our responsibility as an essential part of Americas critical infrastructure. USPS expects to save about $170 million annually from the changes, a small fraction of its operating budget.
There is no compelling financial reason to make this change, Stroman said. The relatively minor savings associated with changing service standards, even if achieved, will have no significant impact on the Postal Services financial future.
Stroman accused DeJoy and the existing board members of abandoning the customers most loyal to and dependent on the Postal Service and said the plan would accelerate people and businesses turning away from the mailing system. He added that rarely, if ever, has a USPS policy change received such widespread pushback.
Anton Hajjar, a former American Postal Workers Union official and another recently confirmed Biden nominee, took a more measured approach, saying there was a whole lot to like in DeJoys plan. He questioned why the slowdowns were necessary, however, before examining the impacts of the investments and other reforms postal management plans to implement.
The postal board met in a private session on Thursday, during which the governors and DeJoy went through their disagreements point by point. Anticipating the rare public display of division at Fridays public meeting, Chairman Ron Bloom, a Trump-appointed Democrat who has endorsed DeJoy and his plan, previewed Stroman and Hajjars remarks and sought to downplay the discord.

I thought he was to be terminated awhile ago?

(13,571 posts)And (despite some new nominees from Biden) there has not been a majority of Board members who wish to fire DeJoy.
Example. Biden appointed Derek Kan, who previously worked for Mitch McConnell and for Mrs. Mitch and also for the RNC Finance.
Why in HELL did that happen?
It just doesn't appear to be a priority for the WH despite the effect on millions of Americans.
I could spend all day every day answering this question from anguished people on social media who do not understand the silence from the WH on this matter and the lack of positive action to save our postal service.

(8,844 posts)DeJoy owns a trucking fleet that for the most part transports the U.S. Mail from location to location.
He may have sold that company, but I doubt it........He was grifting big time, just like his master, Donald Trump......
He and his cronies are out to obliterate the Postal Workers Union, and the USPS so they can privatize the work, awarding it to UPS and FedEx.................the amount of "last mile" packages that are literally dumped on the USPS by UPS and Fedex is staggering.......
He tore out the equipment, just prior to the election and holidays. Any prudent business person would have waited until after the election to do that, but his intentions were to disrupt the mail in ballots, and make the USPS look bad during the Holiday season.

(43,249 posts)Yikes. I still don't get it. They've raised prices far above the rate of inflation for 10 years. You almost can't mail anything over 12 ounces for less than $5, and that's an e-postage price. They've castrated USPS drop boxes by welding then shut except for 1/4" letter slot. My local PO's are now very clean, they've renewed outside contractors for maintenance. They also install non-glare or energy efficient window film. They are buying new vehicles, and how that has been delayed so long with the money they've spent I have no idea. They are pricing themselves out of existence, or relevance anyway, for most people.

(10,252 posts)Isn't that the whole point? Get people to turn to Fedex and UPS for speedier service. Eventually privatize the mail system? Let me remind you that our postal system is a department established in our constitution: Article 1, Section 8, Clause 7. Ben Franklin was the 1st Postmaster General.
