When you hear the phrase Christian nationalists, you might think of antiabortion conservatives who are upset about the phrase Happy Holidays and embrace a vaguely America First way of thinking. But according to a Public Religion Research Institute-Brookings Institution poll released Wednesday, Christian nationalists in fact harbor a set of extreme beliefs at odds with pluralistic democracy. The findings will alarm you.
Christian nationalism is a new term for a worldview that has been with us since the founding of our country the idea that America is destined to be a promised land for European Christians, PRRI president and founder Robert P. Jones explained in a news release on the survey of more than 6,000 Americans. While most Americans today embrace pluralism and reject this anti-democratic claim, majorities of white evangelical Protestants and Republicans remain animated by this vision of a white Christian America.
The poll used the following beliefs to gauge how deeply respondents embraced Christian nationalism:
* The U.S. government should declare America a Christian nation.
* U.S. laws should be based on Christian values.
* If the U.S. moves away from our Christian foundations, we will not have a country anymore.
* Being Christian is an important part of being truly American.
* God has called Christians to exercise dominion over all areas of American society.
PRRI found that 10 percent (adherents) of American adults believe in these ideas overwhelmingly or completely; 19 percent agree but not completely (sympathizers); 39 percent disagree (skeptics) but not completely; and 29 percent disagree completely (rejecters).

(4,440 posts)and have complete power. I don't see anything at all Christian about that. I won't even get into slavery and the accepted abuse of women and girls and child labor.
Give me a break. They are the farthest thing from Christian. And the Bible is one of the books being banned from the lists I've seen. They're just plain nuts.

Just an added thank you to whomever gave me a heart

(8,086 posts)WTF does that even mean?
As in "turning the other cheek" translates into no more "defense" budget.
Or how about "render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's" meaning churches should be taxed, and taxes should be paid without a lot of bellyaching?
Or it's more difficult for a rich man to get into heaven than for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle? Shouldn't that translate into a 99% tax on millionaires and billionaires, as a way of saving their souls?
Or check out all that stuff in the Big Book about feeding the hungry, clothing the poor, helping the sick, visiting folks in prison...
And what the fuck is a "Christian foundation" anyway? Does it mean, like, my sump pump churns out holy water on account of my basement being so darned "Christian"?
Okay, I admit it that last was a feeble joke. Just couldn't resist.

(82,383 posts)Christian nation, no social safety net laws would ever have been passed because they would not be necessary as the rich would give their extra funds to the poor on their own, without government being involved.
If they believed in the Bible, then the camel and the eye of the needle story would frighten them into giving their extra money away to the poor as quickly as they could.
They really don't get it.
