Former Vice President Mike Pence has been subpoenaed by the special counsel overseeing probes into former President Donald Trump, according to multiple sources familiar with the matter.
It's not immediately clear what information the subpoena from special counsel Jack Smith is seeking, but it follows months of negotiations between federal prosecutors and Pence's legal team.
Smith was appointed in November to oversee the investigation into Trump's potential mishandling of classified documents after leaving the presidency and obstructing the government's efforts to retrieve them -- as well as a separate probe into efforts by Trump and his allies to overturn the results of the 2020 election.
A spokesperson for Pence did not respond to a request for comment by ABC News. The special counsel's office also declined to comment. A spokesperson for Trump also did not immediately respond.
Still developing. More: https://abcnews.go.com/US/mike-pence-subpoenaed-special-counsel-overseeing-trump-probes/story?id=97018886

(15,909 posts)I'm simply pissed at the slow and timid pace of going after Trump -- something that even (finally!) real indictments, if they ever come, won't erase.
I'm always happy to see signs of possible progress like this, but they don't make me hold my breath waiting for real-world consequences to befall Trump and his cronies.

(15,909 posts)Maybe a few are absolutely sure Trump is untouchable, but I'd guess most people, even if they're literal words seem to say they think Trump will skate, are merely expressing great exasperation by overstating the case.
ShazzieB
(22,588 posts)And if they don't mean it, I wish they would find a different way to express their exasperation. Yes, they're frustrated; we all are, to one extent or another. The difference, as I see it, is that some of us have not given up and some have. Which is fine; we all have the right to feel how we feel.
The problem comes in when people who have given up hope call those who haven't given up Pollyannas, members of the Merrick Garland fan club, and the like. I don't care how frustrated or exasperated anyone is; insults like that make things worse for everyone. Othering those who disagree with you is unfair and creates a feeling that we are on opposing sides, when actually we are all on the same side, the side that wants Trump to be held to account for at least some of his crimes. We can disagree on the likelihood of that happening, how it may happen, etc., but surely we can do that while agreeing to disagree.
I'm not completely innocent myself; in the past, I have referred to those who are absolutely convinced that Trump will never pay for anything, ever, as Chicken Littles or naysayers (although I honestly see naysayers as more a statement of fact than an actual insult). I realize that I should not insult other people if I don't want them to insult me, and I shall do my best to keep that in mind going forward.

(7,790 posts)But I'm also anxious they worried about the uproar on the Right if they did indict. That's what hits me in the pit of my stomach... that they'd allow politics to enter into this.
They have no idea the uproar if *rump skates free or on a piddling charge. They figure we'll be good and not burn the town down like the Magats no doubt would. That's what keeps me up at night sometimes. We, the "normal Americans" are "flexible" and "understanding" and "nice." We wouldn't behave like the sociopathic Magats. I think this has a thumb on the scale against us. At some point, Law as Law has got to rule the day, or we have no law in this country except against us, the patriotic Americans.

(4,913 posts)This is an example of why are legal system takes time. Investigations take time. We have due process. It's frustrating but that's how it works here in America. Plus the fact this is the largest , most sensitive investigation in our history.

(4,913 posts)Pence is running for president. He does not want to do anything that hurts him politically. He made have requested to be subpoenaed for politically cover. He could then say I had no choice but to appear. If he doesn't try to delay things, which he can. That could be proof he requested to be subpoenaed. What other agreements were negotiated is anybody's guess. It looks like they did come to an agreement.

BumRushDaShow
(169,749 posts)If he came in "voluntarily" (which is how they usually begin before escalating the requests) then he wouldn't have needed to be subpoenaed. The subpoena is usually the end of the "negotiation" process.
A subpoena could give him cover, which I suppose it would show a "requirement" to appear, but then that presupposes that "negotiations broke down" and this was the only way to achieve testimony.

(59,522 posts)Garland was running it.
We were told we never saw any proof of investigation of higher level witnesses and participants from Garland because the DOJ doesn't leak.
I'm very happy that Jack Smith, apparently, leaks like a sieve. Because we are seeing lots of evidence that an investigation is taking place. Evidence we never saw before.

(59,522 posts)I don't know what will come of it, but it disproves the whole "we're not seeing any evidence of an investigation because the DOJ doesn't leak" line of nonsense. We didn't see any evidence because there was no evidence to see.
Now there is evidence to see. Now there actually is an investigation.
