My reason is the money that is going to be made by the production of a show rather than the talent of the players! It is all show! The money that will be paid out is only a fraction of what businesses will receive! Im sure I will listen to the game, but anymore, Im just not interested in any sports, except for high school and some college sports.
And to address this issue. The concept of playing college players is going to ruin my enjoyment of college sports in the future, too. Its all about big bucks and the cost of college will be the small for those who just want a good education.
Money, money, money! That is what its all about!

(7,964 posts)I don't watch anything but the game. Don't care about pre-game, commercials, halftime show. I like watching the world's greatest athletes in high level sports perform on a big stage. The percentage of athletes who can do this in football, basketball, or other sports is very, very small.
I appreciate not just their athletic ability but the fact that these guys playing today have dedicated themselves to year-round workouts and to the mental grind it takes to reach the Super Bowl. I think most on this thread don't understand that. If someone doesn't care about football or this game, that doesn't bother me. Yes it is about greed and materialism, but at its heart it is about what these elite athletes can do on the field on the biggest stage. That's why I loved sports as a kid and still do today, despite all the flaws.

Premier League players will take the knee before the next two weekends' games to display unity against racism. Top-flight matches between 11 and 19 February will be dedicated to the No Room for Racism campaign.
Club captains agreed in August to limit the anti-racism gesture to significant moments rather than every game. "[Taking the knee] is more than a gesture," said former Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi. "It says we must keep working to eradicate racism."
What is taking the knee and why is it important?
As well as the first game of the season and Boxing Day games, Premier League clubs took the knee for two weekends in October as part of the No Room for Racism campaign. A month later, Ameobi became one of seven former players to join its Player to Executive Pathways Scheme (PEPS).
The pilot project gives ex-players from ethnically diverse backgrounds experience of club operations and aims to help increase diversity in leadership positions. "It's always been an aspiration of mine to help the club and inspire the next generation," said Ameobi. "If you don't see yourself represented in the boardroom, it's hard to have the confidence to be there."

(37,247 posts)We do watch the Superbowl mostly to be integrated into our culture, in this case, a less than worthy aspect of culture, so we can converse with other people. (For example, one of the owners of the company at which I work is marrying a guy who's a huge fan of the Eagles.)
Still, it's a very dangerous sport with huge health consequences for the participants.
Recently I became aware of this news item:
BU Finds CTE in Nearly 92 Percent of Ex-NFL Players Studied
According to its latest report, the CTE Center has diagnosed 345 former NFL players with chronic traumatic encephalopathy, out of 376 former players who were studied, a rate of 91.7 percent. Two retired players from the two teams facing off in Super Bowl LVII on Sundaythe Kansas City Chiefs and the Philadelphia Eagleswere among those diagnosed with CTE in the last year. Those ex-players are one-time Eagles quarterback Rick Arrington, who played for them from 1970 to 73, and former Chiefs defensive tackle Ed Lothamer, who played for two of their Super Bowl teams.
To put those numbers in perspective, a 2018 BU study of 164 brains of men and women donated to the Framingham Heart Study found that only 1 of 164 (less than 1 percent) showed signs of the progressive degenerative brain disease. And that lone CTE case? A former college football player.
It's only partially removed from gladiatorial fights to the death.

(9,332 posts)This is how many people make their living. Would you pay to go to a concert, a play, buy a book, subscribe to a paper or subscribe to DU for that matter. Things in life cost money. The fact that these people make A LOT of money speaks to football and professional sports in general being very popular.
My wife and I like going to concerts and shows, we also love the high school productions at the local high school. There is a cost to them too. Not as high , but a high school ticket for us is usually ten dollars each and then we make a 50 dollar contribution at the intermission. Its a hell of a lot cheaper than going to the Kennedy Center so we try to add extra support to developing talent.

Anyway, this is normally where I would complain that March Madness is about to take over (I haven't had any interest in basketball in years) but as the cost of cable and streaming services has gone through the roof, March Madness won't be interrupting our regular TV habits, because we couldn't afford to keep any live TV.
I'm not even sure we have access to tonight's game. We did pay for the service that gave us CBS Sunday games, but I'm betting the Super Bowl isn't included in that package. If Paramount (or Peacock, or Hulu, or any of the services) can find a way to get you're money, they'll do it.

No, I don't follow sports ball of any kind. The last time I got excited about the Super Bowl was in 1985, when the Bears won it. And even then, it was more a matter of getting sweepstakes up in the general excitement of those around me.
My favorite thing that's happening today is this:

(5,911 posts)care about football, I won't support the misogynistic, racist, in-group bias supporting, "opiate of the masses" that is the NFL (and pretty any professional sports organization). I don't plan to go out of my way to see any of the half time show or the commercials.

(9,212 posts)But I am watching the puppy bowl 19. They just scored a double touchdown😹 I recommend it. I think I may have missed the kitten bowl this year.

BTW: I'm watching The Food Network with an occasional foray to the SB. So, I'm not focused on it, but I can understand why others are.

I actually used to like watching a game or two of pro football years ago when I was a young woman. That was back when the games could be played in a snowstorm and the guys would have to contend with unpredictable weather. Now it's so predictable and who knows how many of the "elite athletes" are just pumped up on steroids.

(6,448 posts)did their broadcasts in Old Town Scottsdale. A small section of a side street is where their broadcast trailer was set up. Traffic went on as usual and pedestrians were able to walk in safety. Many visitor helped to support the family owned businesses in this area. This is about 3 miles from where I live.
